The TCL ELIT400NC review

Active noise cancellation (ANC) is one of the biggest drivers of customer audio technology today. As manufacturers who have implemented ANC on their earphones and headphones over the years are launching updated merchandise, new gamers have entered the section that brought ANC to the masses through audio merchandise worth less than half the value of their premium counterparts.

One such merchandise that we got our fingers on not so long ago is the TCL ELIT400NC. The ANC compatible headphones offer a ton of options and are available for a value of Rs 6,999. We’ve tried the headphones every week and here’s what we take into account. This is our TCL ELIT400NC review.

TCL ELIT400NC test: design

The TCL ELIT400NC headphones are good looking over-the-ear headphones and feature a great design. Although the black variety looks much more expensive than the white, both feature a portable shape that you can fold and tuck the ear cups into. The headband is soft and comfortable for long-term use. The tension between the ends is also just right for the average sized head, providing a snug fit without the feel of the earmuffs pressing on your skull. The ear cups themselves are very nicely cushioned and provide a comfortable grip around the ears without hurting.

It is a problematic area buttons on the headphones. The small buttons barely protrude from the chassis and are hard to find in the early days of using your headphones. Furthermore, they press very lightly to trigger an action, which means you don’t get very good feedback. Check out the image below. This design works well for the ANC switch on the other side as that is a sliding switch, but the same design on the other side. buttons makes controlling your music playback more difficult than on most headphones. Unlike the rest of the headphones, which offer an excellent build quality, the buttons come out a bit shaky too.

TCL ELIT400NC review: sound quality

The TCL ELIT400NC presents a clear, beautifully balanced sound. The highs, mids and lows are effectively balanced here so that customers can enjoy every kind of music genres from jazz to hip hop and every part in between. Instrument separation is great, but bass-heavy songs can really feel a little flat on vocals. The bass gets really punchy and low when a monitor calls for it and bass heads will love the sound. These headphones provide great overall audio efficiency, making them ideal for music, movies and even video games. High-Resolution Audio may help for those of you who enjoy listening to lossless codecs.

However, the active noise cancellation wasn’t that spectacular. When you turn on the switch, the characteristic turns on and you will immediately notice a difference in sound quality where the headphones will try to cancel out the background, as with most headphones. This didn’t work very effectively for us, because even though background noises like that from a ceiling fan were significantly reduced, they were still audible.

Furthermore, switching to ANC mode dropped the amount output quite a bit, making background noise extra clear. We therefore mostly used headphones with ANC turned off, and you would no doubt want to do the same to get the best out of this product. This would also prevent longer battery life as ANC is thought to drain the battery sooner.

TCL ELIT400NC test: battery life

The TCL ELIT400NC offers about 20 hours of battery life, but the company claims you can rack the juice for up up to 10pm, depending on what music you’re listening to and at what volume levels. That’s very good battery life for a pair of wireless over-the-ear headphones at this price.

Charging is still via a micro USB port and if you have a phone with a Type-C port you will find that you have an extra charging cable with you. However, with the long battery life, you don’t have to carry that cable very often. There is also a 3.5mm port for the included AUX cable that you can use if you’re running out of battery (provided your smartphone has a 3.5mm port left).

TCL ELIT400NC rating: Final Words

Well yes. The TCL ELIT400NC are a great pair of headphones and the combination of a clear, rich sound, deep bass and long battery life that you get with the headphones is excellent for that price. However, if ANC is your top priority, you are better off with other products, which in turn may cost more.
