The TWS Buds Review: Google Pixel Buds A-Series: Most Comfortable & Natural Sounding
Google has finally entered the crowded TWS earbud market in India with its new pair of truly wireless earbuds. Priced at Rs. 9,999, the Pixel Buds A-Series are the company’s second TWS earbuds (Pixel Buds – 2020 didn’t make it to India) and have some big shoes to fill.
Unlike most comparably priced and even some cheaper TWS earbuds, the Pixel Buds A Series lacks ANC and wireless charging — two features which have become very popular in the TWS market.
Instead, as always, Google is going big on the basics, promising better in-ear comfort, natural sound reproduction, and some good-to-have features such as Always-On Hands-Free Google Assistant support. The same formula of “fewer bells and whistles, but uncompromising basics” has worked for the Google Pixel series phones’ camera’s, but is it for the TWS Earbuds? Let’s find out.
The Pixel Buds A Series reflects Google’s hardware design philosophy that focuses largely on minimal aesthetics and ease of use. The egg-shaped small housing has a soft matte finish and remains free of smudges and fingerprints. Weighing 52.9 grams and measuring 63x47x 25 mm, the case is extremely light and portable.
A Type-C charging port sits on the bottom and an LED flashes on the front when you open the lid. Google also added a physical feature button at the back which ensures a smooth coupling process. Surprisingly, there is no visible Google branding on the case, instead the buttons have the Google logo on the touch sensitive areas.
You don’t need two hands to open the lid, a light thumb pressure does the job. In terms of build quality, the case is durable enough to handle some pressure and dents. A hard fall to the concrete floor couldn’t hurt the plastic or matte pain job of the suitcase. The lid is also quite sturdy and has a very sure spring mechanism.
Unfortunately, the case lacks the IP rating for protection against water damage; something that was offered on the first generation Pixel Buds that never made it to the Indian market. Also, Google should have launched both the Dark Olive color variant in India. For now, you can only buy the Pixel Buds A-series in the color ‘Clearly White’.
I’m so glad I finally found a pair of truly wireless earbuds that can be worn for long music sessions. The Pixel Buds A Series are by far the most comfortable TWS earbuds I’ve come across.
The OnePlus Buds Pro are also very comfortable to wear, but they don’t feel as secure as the Pixel buds. The Pixel A series earbuds come with a soft-fitting ear tips and have a very unique design element – a fin that keeps them intact in your ear cavity.
Google calls it “Stabilizer Arc” and they gently tuck in the ear and secure the earbuds in place so they don’t pop out even when you’re running, cycling or doing cardio at the gym. The earbuds can be adjusted with three different tip sizes to help you find the perfect fit. The earbuds are IPX4 water resistant and can withstand some water damage. Make sure that the case does not face that water as it is not water resistant.
I should also mention how good these buds look in action. Unlike most TWS earbuds, the Pixel Buds A series has a unique disc-like outer casing with a minimal yet elegant look. They also sit almost evenly without a stem hanging from the ears. Overall, Google’s effortless design philosophy matches up well with the Pixel Buds A series.
