BLU Vivo 5R Review

Update - 2020.04.15

Overview

BLU Vivo 5R

BLU Vivo 5R Review: BLU is a relatively small smartphone producer who hails out of Miami, FL. The y’ve garnered quite a bit of attention over the past few years for releasing unlocked smartphones at relatively low costs. They have a variety of smartphones out right now that fit all type of users and budgets. The Vivo line has typically been their budget line of smartphones, and thus they’re usually lower-end. However, that’s not the case with the Vivo 5R which the company is launching today for just $199. A smartphone comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD curved display, fingerprint sensor and an octa-core 1.3GHz processor for $199? Sounds a bit too good to be true. However is it? We’ll find out in this review.

Specs

BLU Vivo 5R

The specs on the Vivo 5R are a bit shocking, given how cheap the smartphone is. However, we’re looking at a 5.5-inch 1080p display which provides 401 pixels per inch. The re’s a MediaTek MT6753 octa-core 1.3GHz processor inside, together with the Mali-T720 GPU for graphics. This is paired with 3GB of RAM, providing you with plenty of RAM for multitasking and such. It comes with a 32GB of storage with a micro SD card slot. The Vivo 5R also comes with a 3150mAh non-removable battery which should last you all day long.

In the Box

BLU Vivo 5R

BLU Vivo 5R typically packs the box full of all types of goodies. Right on top, the re’s the Vivo 5R. Below that lies the wall adapter, a USB OTG adapter, micro USB to USB-A cable, a SIM ejection tool and a pair of headphones. However hang on, because that’s not all. The re’s also a SIM installation guide, a screen protector, and a TPU case. So it’s good having it included in the box.

Design

BLU Vivo 5R

This smartphone has a metal jacket, which not only appears good however also feels good in the hand. Our model here is the gold one. However, it looks a bit more like rose gold. And to be honest, I like the colour. It also comes with a fingerprint sensor at the bottom. It has a 5.5-inch display. Vivo 5R has a SIM card tray on the left side; that is a dual SIM card tray. The  power button with the volume button on the right side of the smartphone. And the bottom has the micro USB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is good to see that BLU kept that headphone jack, with other producers getting rid of it. However that likely would have raised the price on the Vivo 5R.

Display

BLU Vivo 5R

BLU states that the display on the Vivo 5R is a curved display. It is not as curved as what you see on the Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. It’s a very subtle curve, which gives the edges a bit thinner – however still comfortable. It has a 1920 x 1080 resolution panel. In fact, we’d like to see a QHD display here on the Vivo 5R.

Performance

BLU Vivo 5R

The Vivo 5R has an octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor. Vivo 5R comes with a 3GB of RAM, giving you some power to get things done. The re’s sufficient power here to use your regular apps like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and Gmail, without any problem. Whereas 3GB of RAM may seem to be a small amount of RAM in the fall of 2020, it’s still sufficient to keep the phone running easily. We never had apps needing to redraw themselves, after selecting them in the multitasking window – meaning we never ran out of RAM.

Battery Life

BLU Vivo 5R

BLU Vivo 5R has a 3150mAh battery which is quite massive given the size of the smartphone. That battery capacity is enough to get you through the entire day. The Vivo 5R typically lasted us above 24 hours with at least two hours on screen time and sometimes more. also playing Pokemon GO, it’ll also last you quite some time, more than most other smartphones on the market right now.

Camera

BLU Vivo 5R

The camera at the rear of the Vivo 5R is a Sony IMX258 sensor, which is a 13-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera. It features a phase detection auto-focus and f/2.0 aperture. Pictures we took with this camera came out really good looking. It is decent enough for taking photos for Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram and other social media networks. However, it definitely won’t substitute your DSLR or even your point and shoot camera.

Conclusion

BLU Vivo 5R

BLU can compete with Moto and Lenovo. However, their brand experience is not good as Lenovo. If you want a new phone under $200, then sure, BLU Vivo 5R is a nice smartphone to pick up. It holds a lot of the boxes that users look for when buying a new smartphone; the only drawback is that BLU is still a small producer, especially when compared to LG, SamsungLenovo and even HTC.
