Hands-on with the Sony Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra

March 8, 2017

Whereas Sony followers enjoy the latest announcement of the company’s brand latest flagship phones, the Xperia XZ Premium and XZs, they also used MWC 2017 to unveil its successors to the Xperia XA line that were launched last year. For many who aren’t able to afford the high price of Sony’s flagships, the XA1 Ultra and Xperia XA1 should prove to be more price efficient – without sacrificing the attraction with Sony’s designs. Focusing on beefy cameras, visual technology, and superior audio, and near bezel-less displays, they’re certainly going to offer some bang for the buck.

The Xperia XA1 seems every bit like a Sony phone. It has a healthy bezel on the top and bottom, however almost none on the sides. It has a 5-inch 720p display, MediaTek Kelio P20 octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 2300 mAh battery, microSD card slot, and Android Nougat. The camera is 23MP on the rear and 8MP on the front.

The Xperia XA1 Ultra has mainly the identical design. However, the top and bottom bezels aren’t nearly as massive. It has a 6-inch 1080p display, MediaTek Helio P20 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32/64GB of storage, 2700 mAh battery, microSD card slot, and Android Nougat. The Ultra has the identical 23MP camera, however a bigger 16MP front shooter.

The XA1 will be available in May for $299, whereas the XA1 Ultra will be available around the identical time. We don’t have pricing information for the Ultra. The phones will be available in the US at retailers like Best Buy and Amazon.

That’s not too shabby when you consider it. However, we’re interested to see where they place the XA1 Ultra later on in late spring. We are hoping to see it under $500 at the very least, just because anything more than that, it’ll be competing against different giants in the premium space.
