Twitter is looking for a country director to lead India, a role the global microblogging site is looking to fill in a country that may not have kept its promise of strong advertising growth despite the growing penetration of smartphones and the Internet.
Twitter’s latest CEO, Taranjeet Singh, left the country in September after three and a half years in the middle of low advertising revenue. He was invited to strengthen his presence in local sales by establishing partnerships with brands and agencies to deepen the engagement of their customers on the microblogging site.
According to sources, the monthly number of active users of Twitter amounts to 30-33 million, against 270 million for Facebook. Twitter does not disclose the metrics officially. “Twitter is looking for an experienced digital executive to lead the Indian market. This is a rare opportunity to play a leading role as a P & L leader, directly leading the country’s sales team, “says Twitter’s career website. Twitter did not respond to an e-mail soliciting comments on its strategy for India, including the latest initiative taken to fill the void of its leadership.
In 2016, Twitter seems to have de-prioritized India as a market even though it is one of the strengths of the growing number of users. This decision was part of the massive restructuring undertaken by Twitter, led by its CEO, Jack Dorsey, to prevent stagnant growth in global revenue. India’s weak sales statistics did not deserve strategic attention.
