For several reasons, the JBL Flip series is one of the most popular lines of Bluetooth speakers. The most significant of which was that each Flip speaker was available for less than $100. The JBL Flip 4 is now older, however it does not make it obsolete. How does it currently compare to the most recent competition? In brief, exceptionally well. The Flip 4 retains the same cylindrical form as its predecessors and is offered in a variety of colours. It is easy to hold with one hand and is not too hefty, weighing 515g. Except for the borders and a silicone strip that runs along the length of the speaker, the body is almost entirely covered with mesh fabric. As there are passive radiators on both ends, the Flip 4 is intended to be utilised in a horizontal orientation.
There are buttons for controlling Bluetooth pairing and music playback. They have a pleasant clicky feel, but are not lit. Despite its cylindrical shape, the Flip 4 does not roll since the silicone strip provides a nice base for the speaker to rest on. The back of the Flip 4 features a lighted power button, five LED dots that indicate the battery level, and a backlit Connect+ button that enables the connection of more than 100 Flip 4 devices. Next to the Micro-USB port and 3.5mm auxiliary connector is a rubber flap for protection. The Flip 4 also includes a loop with a pre-installed lanyard so the speaker may be hung if there is no suitable surface for it to stand on.
[content-egg-block template=offers_logo hide=price]The JBL Flip 4 is quite similar to its predecessor in terms of specifications. The Bluetooth version has been upgraded to 4.2, but the headphones still include two 40mm full-range speakers with a total output of 16W. It supports Bluetooth profiles such as A2DP V1.3, AVRCP V1.6, HFP V1.6, and HSP V1.2, as well as a frequency response of 70Hz to 20,000Hz. You receive a 3000mAh battery certified for 12 hours of continuous playback and a microphone for answering calls. There are no additional features such as NFC or aptX HD support. Included in the package are instructions and a Micro-USB cable. The inclusion of IPX7 certification renders the Flip 4 submersible in water up to 1 metre deep for up to 30 minutes.
The Flip 4 can simultaneously handle two active Bluetooth connections, which is great if you’re hosting a party and want to share DJ duties with someone else. Even though it may not fulfil statutory standards for ruggedness, the speaker feels fairly sturdy and appears to be able to withstand a few of falls without shattering. The diffused LED lights on the speaker are not obnoxious in the dark, but we wish the controls were illuminated as well.
