Motorola has found a good way to make cheap phones with the Moto G Power. Since a phone that costs less than $300 can’t be everything to everyone, the key is to find one or two features that people really care about and do them really well. For the Moto G Power, that feature is how long the battery lasts. The Moto G7 Power and the Moto G Power from last year both lived up to the promise that they would be long-lasting phones. The one from this year is just as impressive.
The back and frame of the flat screen on the G Power are made of plastic. Our review unit is grey with a subtle half-circle pattern that looks almost like a big fingerprint. This is fitting, as it is easy to get fingerprints and smudges on it. There are also blue and silver options. At 6.5 by 3.0 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and 7.3 ounces, the G Power is big but can be used with one hand. Its weight is spread out well, which makes it easy to hold for long Netflix sessions.
On the front of the phone is a hole-punch LCD with a size of 6.6 inches and a resolution of 1,600 by 720 pixels. Even though the updated G Power’s screen is just a little bit bigger than last year’s 1080p screen, the lower resolution means you lose out. On the top of the phone is a headphone jack, and the bottom has a USB-C charging port and a speaker.
With this year’s Moto G series, Motorola keeps up its well-earned reputation for making phones with a clean version of Android. And Motorola’s gesture-based shortcuts are back, so you can do things like turn on the phone’s flashlight with a chopping motion. Even though Motorola’s new phone is impressive in all of these ways, we did find a few problems when we tested it for my Moto G Power (2021) review. The biggest problems with the phone are its display, which is a bit dim and doesn’t always show the most vivid colours, and its processor, which isn’t as fast as other low-cost phones.
The Moto G Power’s Snapdragon 662 chipset also means that it can only connect to LTE networks, not 5G networks. Let’s not hide the truth. The Moto G Power (2021) is a good choice if you want a phone that stays charged for a long time. With a 5,000 mAh battery, this phone can keep its promise.
