The top of every browser’s window has a horizontal tab bar, Add Tab Sidebars to Google Chrome and possibly all others. There is a limit to how many tabs can fit on the bar, and once you have nine or ten open, they start to get smaller. But with a few extensions, you can give Chrome an entirely new vertical tab bar.
A vertical bar actually makes a little more sense because all the tabs can fit inside without having to be shrunk. Additionally, it’s much simpler to fit search options at a sidebar’s top. Therefore, it surprises me that tab sidebars haven’t been added to browsers yet. These are a few of the extensions that give Google Chrome a tab sidebar.
Add Tab Sidebars to Google Chrome
By Enabling a Flag Setting
Google Chrome has an Experimental tab that includes a series of flag settings with which you can enable that browser’s experimental features. Among them is a Side panel option that activates a hidden bookmark and reading list sidebar in Google Chrome when enabled.
- Input chrome://flags/ within Chrome’s URL bar, and press the Return keyboard key.
- Enter the keyword side panel within the Experiments page search box.
- Click the drop-down menu for the Side panel flag and select Enabled
- To give the sidebar additional drag-and-drop page functionality, select Enabled for the Side panel drag and drop flag option. With the Bookmark Sidebar Extension
- Press the Relaunch button to restart Google Chrome.
With the Bookmark Sidebar Extension
As an alternative, you can give Google Chrome the Bookmarks Sidebar extension. An extension called Bookmarks Sidebar gives Chrome a more individualized side panel for saved web pages. By selecting Add to Chrome on the Bookmarks Sidebar page, you can add it to Google’s default browser.
You can access Bookmarks Sidebar once you’ve added it to Chrome by clicking the Extensions button on the browser. On the URL toolbar, select the Extensions button (jigsaw icon). To add the button for that extension to the URL toolbar, choose the Pin option for the Bookmarks Sidebar.
Right-click the Bookmarks extension button on the URL toolbar to select Options. The Settings tab will then open from which you can configure the sidebar. Click Sidebar > General to access the Position option. Then you can select Left or Right on the Position drop-down menu to change what side of the browser the sidebar opens on.
