Xiaomi’s interpretation of a 2-in-1 tablet running Windows is called the Book S. It shares a lot of similarities with Microsoft’s very own Surface Pro X as well as the recently launched Surface Pro 9 5G, both of which are powered by ARM processors and have a design that is very much like this one. However, considering how affordable it is, the Xiaomi Book S is a really intriguing option.
It is a lot less expensive than the options that Microsoft provides, and it guarantees a similar experience with equivalent technical requirements.Should you give serious consideration to purchasing the Xiaomi Book S rather than one of the popular Surface models if you want a convertible computer that runs Windows 11. In order to find out, we have been putting it through its paces.

Xiaomi Book S review: Design

The Xiaomi Book S can be used as a tablet, but you can also use it as a makeshift laptop if you buy the compatible keyboard for an extra £129. It weighs 720g without the keyboard and an extra 317g with the keyboard. We were surprised by how heavy it was for a 2-in-1 gadget, and we could really feel it when we carried it to and from work in my backpack. I thought it was a lot like carrying a regular laptop, which was a little upsetting because we thought it would be easier to move around with.
The tablet’s body is made of an aluminum-magnesium alloy. It looks sleek and grown up, and the back has a 13MP camera section. But, to make things easier, we left the back cover attached to the device almost every time we used it. The back cover and keyboard are both made of fake leather and look the same. On the back, it says “Xiaomi,” which is the company’s name.
Xiaomi Book S: Display and audio
We like that the screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio, which makes it good for papers and websites. However, when you watch widescreen movies, the black bars are bigger. No matter what we asked the screen of the Xiaomi Book S to do, it did it well. There are tablet screens that are better than this one, but Xiaomi’s is better than you might think for the price. Xiaomi Book S: Camera

The back of the tablet has a 13-megapixel camera, and the front has a 720p screen. Both aren’t very good, so we hope you won’t be taking a lot of photos with your tablet. However, the screen does work with Windows Hello, which makes it easier to sign in to your user account. There are two audio speakers built in, which are fine for watching movies and listening to podcasts, but not much else.
Xiaomi Book S: Smart Pen
As for the trackpad, it’s good enough, and you can always add a mouse (though, since there are no ports on the board, you’ll probably want to go wireless). You can also buy a Xiaomi Smart Pen pen for an extra £89. This is a must-have for anyone who wants to do creative work on their Xiaomi Book S.
Performance and Battery
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8CX gen 2 technology is what makes the Xiaomi Book S work. This SoC came out in 2020, so it’s not exactly the most powerful processor on the market. In real life, the show isn’t that great.
Anything but the most basic tasks will greatly slow down the machine, and since we do work that requires three or four applications to be open at all times, the computing power here wasn’t enough for our daily tasks.
Price and Availability
However, there is some bad news as well: both the battery life and the performance levels are about par for the course. In addition, the price is reasonable; but, if you opt to get the keyboard and the stylus in addition to it, the total cost will be $819. This is despite the fact that the price is competitive. That is not at all an affordable price.
Final Words
There is a lot of potential in the 2-in-1 notebook that Xiaomi calls the Book S. It is difficult to suggest because of its unsatisfactory performance in productivity tasks and the fact that it does not function effectively as a stand-alone tablet, despite its streamlined design and the availability of an optional keyboard that makes it simple to use.

Xiaomi Book S review: the good and the bad
The Good
- Keyboard feels good to use
- Fast charging
The Bad
- Keyboard case needs work
faqs
The Book S has a fixed refresh rate of 60Hz that can’t be changed. This doesn’t surprise me, but it would have been nice if it had an adjustable refresh rate so it could compete with the Surface Pro 9 from Microsoft. The Xiaomi Book S has two cameras.
The 12.4-inch tablet weighs 720g, and the keyboard weighs 317g. It’s important to know that the Xiaomi Book S 12.4 runs Windows 11 in S mode, which Microsoft says is “streamlined for security and performance while providing a familiar Windows experience.”
