Technology geeks are discussing new rumors of an unexpected camera win for the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S26 phone set for release beginning in 2026.
There are very few specifics so far, but reports suggest that this will be a significant departure in Samsung’s picture-making strategy with its non-Ultra flagship cameras.
For several generations including today’s Galaxy S25, Samsung has continued to slap the 50MP ISOCELL GN3 sensor as the lead shooter on the standard of Plus models.
But the Galaxy S26 and possibly the fabled Galaxy S26 Edge will see quite the core hardware change, if sources are to be believed.
Samsung is working on a new 50MP main camera sensor for the Galaxy S26: Report Contrary to the resolution, the new sensor is said to be a Sony-built imager boasting 1.0µm pixels.
The pixel size is the same as the current GN3 sensor although the jump to Sony hardware suggests a focus more on better image quality achieved through better internal architecture (what that could be is anyone’s guess, maybe new pixel tech).
This shift possibly resulting in a significant upgrade in detail, dynamic range and lower light performance which has been a sticking point where companies using these larger Sony sensors have had a bit of an advantage.
Ironically, there are also rumors of a Galaxy S26 Edge being introduced, as a possible replacement for Samsung following the tradition of the Plus model in its top end series.
This model could also receive the new 50MP Sony sensor, a step down from the 200MP lens of the current S25 Edge.
It might be a hint of something strategic when it comes to keeping image quality at consistent levels on the number side of the S26 range, or even a rethink of the tele options on the Edge.
We don’t know full details of the new Sony sensor, but if this hardware upgrade does happen, it would be a big change for Samsung’s non-Ultra flagships.
If those rumors pan out, the Galaxy S26 would be a potentially the most significant camera upgrade to Samsung’s main S series in years, possibly, the boost they’ll need to help them match or even outdo rival phones with strong camera performance.
Tech analysts expect that more information on the camera system for the Galaxy S26 will come out as the launch date for the phone approaches.
