Google has just introduced what is perhaps the most requested feature in Gmail’s 20-year history: the ability to swap your embarrassing email address for a new one without losing a single byte of data.
The feature appeared quietly on Google’s Hindi support pages, suggesting that India may be the testing ground before a global rollout. Currently, the English version still states that Gmail addresses “cannot usually be changed,” but the updated Hindi page tells a different story.
How the address change works
When you change your Gmail address, your old address doesn’t just disappear into digital oblivion. It remains as an alias, receives emails, and keeps you logged in to Drive, YouTube, Maps, and all other services associated with your account. Your photos, messages, and years of accumulated digital data remain exactly where they are.
The catch? You can only make this change once a year. Once you’ve chosen your new address, you’re stuck with it for 12 months before Google will allow you to change it again. You also can’t delete the new address once you’ve decided on it.
Who this actually helps
There were numerous reactions on social media, ranging from relief to nostalgia. Some users celebrated being able to get rid of their middle school addresses. Members of the transgender community appreciated the opportunity to distance themselves from their old names. One Reddit user joked about keeping “StonerBeast42069” forever, while an X user summed up the timing perfectly: “Feature needed: 2005. Feature available: 2025. Gap: two decades of suffering.”
Microsoft Outlook has offered easy address changes via aliases for years, so this is a long-overdue move for Gmail. Until now, Gmail users who wanted a fresh start had to create new accounts and migrate everything manually — a messy process that often broke connections to third-party apps.

Current Availability Status
Google hasn’t issued an official announcement about this feature. The updated guidance currently appears only on the Hindi version of Google’s support pages, suggesting India might be the initial testing market. The English-language support page still states that Gmail addresses “usually cannot be changed”. Google hasn’t responded to inquiries about which regions will receive access first or when the feature will reach all users globally.
