OpenAI is launching ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, a program that will grant free access to the company’s AI models to 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from select academic institutions. The rollout begins this summer with 10,000 participants and will scale gradually through 2027.
Accepted researchers will receive hands-on support from OpenAI, access to the GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model, and the ability to invite four collaborators from their institution. The company has committed more than $250 million through 2027 to fund external scientific research and discovery.
The program formalizes a relationship that already exists informally. Researchers have been integrating AI into their workflows for data analysis and grant writing. OpenAI already offers ChatGPT Edu for schools, and the new researcher-focused initiative follows a similar model of institutional engagement.
OpenAI has stated that researchers’ data will not be used to train models by default. This addresses a significant concern for academics who worry about contributing proprietary or sensitive research data to commercial AI training pipelines.
The initiative connects to OpenAI’s existing research outreach. In January, the company released Prism, an AI-powered tool for working with scientific journals and documents. Available to anyone with a ChatGPT account, Prism verifies research citations, checks formatting, and can generate lesson plans.
By distributing free access across scientific fields, OpenAI deepens its integration into academic workflows. The multi-year financial commitment and structured rollout indicate the company expects this relationship to evolve beyond initial experimentation.
