The camera is the headline hardware change

The variable-aperture camera is one of the more unusual changes. Apple uses six laser-cut blades to adjust the aperture between four settings. A20 Pro, cooling and battery
Another new feature is Apple Reference Image, which aims to provide a verifiable reference for photos captured with supported hardware. Apple says the system can sign sensor data and create an unalterable reference image that can be compared with an edited version. The company also plans support for SynthID later in the year. These tools are aimed at helping users distinguish original captures from edited or AI-generated imagery.
Performance comes from A20 Pro, which Apple says is built on a 2-nanometer process. The company lists a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine, with more memory bandwidth than the previous generation. Apple also says the new chip can improve on-device AI processing and computational photography.
The Pro Max’s battery changes are paired with the new processor and cooling system. Apple says the phone can provide up to 43 hours of video playback under its stated testing conditions, while a five-minute wired charge can provide around seven hours of video playback. The charging figures are based on Apple’s own testing with specified power adapters and cables, so actual results vary with temperature, usage and accessories.

Apple is also using the same launch to bring its wider product ecosystem into stores. The Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5 became available alongside the new iPhones. Apple says customers can purchase the products in stores, online and through the Apple Store app, with Apple Specialists providing setup and trade-in assistance.
The launch is taking place in a market where Apple is also introducing its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, although that product follows a later preorder and retail schedule.
