Since 2017, one of our favorite radios has been the Sangean WR-15. The half-circle tuning dial is easy to read, and the tuning knob in the middle feels smooth. The green LED light above the dial lets you know when you’ve found a station with the best signal. The design looks like old radios but is clean and easy to use. The radio comes in three finishes: wood, black leatherette, and silver piano (shown above).
When we tested it, the WR-15 could pick up 17 of the 42 FM radio stations in the San Diego area using its built-in FM antenna. Due to how far away our testing site was from the transmitters, the best performance we saw was a total of 21 stations. See How we chose and tested to learn more about how we tested.) And it sent out messages that were clearer, louder, and had less static than most of the other radios we tried.

The Sangean WR-11SE is almost the same as the WR-15 in terms of speed and hardware. It just comes in a different box. Think of it as the size of three small flat-rate Priority Mail boxes stacked on top of each other. The WR-11SE received about the same amount of FM channels as the WR-15 and just a few more AM stations than the WR-15.
Its reception, on the other hand, wasn’t quite as good. This radio had more static than the WR-15, but it still worked better than many other radios we tried and clearly picked up popular stations. It has the same LED light as the WR-15 to let you know when you’ve locked on to a station, as well as an internal FM antenna and an extra outdoor FM antenna. With its rear-firing bass port, it also has the same rich sound.
The Good
- Classic and retro design with a wooden cabinet.
- Compact size suitable for tabletop placement.
- Clear and bright LED tuning indicator.
- Multiple presets for easy access to favorite stations.
- Auxiliary input for connecting external devices.

Tivoli Audio Model One BT

| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Product Name | Tivoli Audio Model One BT |
| Dimensions | 8.375 x 4.5 x 5.25 inches |
| Weight | 4.1 pounds |
| Tuner | AM/FM |
| Presets | 5 AM and 5 FM |
| Input/Output | Auxiliary input, headphone jack, Bluetooth |
| Power Source | AC power or rechargeable battery (optional) |
| Additional Features | Wooden cabinet, Bluetooth connectivity |
There are a lot of radios that have Bluetooth, but the Tivoli Audio Model One BT is one of the few that does it with as much style and flair. It’s a beautiful radio to look at, and it’s very easy to connect to a Bluetooth device, like a smart phone. It’s a lot cheaper than similar Bluetooth models like the Como Audio Solo. It doesn’t have as many advanced features as those models, but it does a few simple things very well. Consider the Model One BT if you like to listen to both AM/FM radio and Bluetooth music.
It’s not even close to the best radio here, though. We think the sound is fine, but sometimes it can be a bit sharp, especially when listening to AM/FM. Try the Grace Digital Mondo Elite Classic, which is shown below, for better sound. Notable is that Tivoli Audio makes several different versions of this radio. The Model Three has a clock, and the Model One Digital has Wi-Fi. Both cost $300. The Model One BT is the best radio they make, in our opinion.
The Good
- Classic design with a wooden cabinet.
- Compact and portable size.
- Multiple presets for easy access to favorite stations.
- Bluetooth connectivity for wireless streaming.
- Auxiliary input and headphone jack for additional connectivity options.
- Optional rechargeable battery for portable use.
The Bad
- Limited preset options compared to some other models.
- Rechargeable battery sold separately.
Panasonic RF-2400D

| Additional Features | Portable design, carrying handle |
We think there’s a place for inexpensive tabletop radios like the Panasonic RF-2400D. For only $34, you can get a very good AM/FM radio that is easy to use and works well. The sound is surprisingly good. It’s not as good as similar-priced radios like the Avantree SP850, shown below, but it’s more than good enough to stand on its own (especially since the Avantree only has FM). The Panasonic RF-2400D is a good choice if all you want is a simple, reliable radio that can pick up AM and FM stations almost all of the time.
There are two things that might make people not want to buy. The first is the looks, which are, to put it mildly, practical. The second problem is that several reviewers have said they had trouble with the channel hold. Channel hold is a radio’s ability to stay locked on a certain station. This can let static in. Even though we haven’t been in this situation, we think it’s important enough to say.
The Good
- Portable and compact design.
- Lightweight with a convenient carrying handle.
- Simple and easy-to-use interface.
- Headphone jack for private listening.
- Can be powered by either AC or batteries.
The Bad
- Lacks preset options.
- No advanced connectivity features.
