Users of Microsoft Word can use the following keyboard shortcuts to Disable Accent Keys on Mac. For example, to get the character, hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys while pressing the key (tilde key). Then, let go of all three keys and press the n key quickly.
If you’re using a Macintosh, it’s easy: hold down the option key and another key that makes the accent, and then type the vowel (the option key creates a “dead” key until you type the vowel). The KeyCaps desk accessory can be used to find out where these accents are (open KeyCaps, look at the on-screen keyboard, and hold down the option key).
In general, use option + e to make an aigu accent, option + the grave symbol (located under the left escape button), option + I for a circumflex accent, option + u for a dieresis accent, and option + c for a cedilla accent.
If you are on a PC, use these codes to make the characters with accents. These are the Windows-based codes, and they should work in most word processors that work with Windows (i.e. MS Word, MS Works, Wordpad).

FAQ
Why is my Mac keyboard typing symbols?
Your result shows that your computer thinks you are holding down both option and shift while you type. The symbols aren’t picked at random; they show what should happen when those keys are pressed. Most of the time, this means that the keyboard is broken, especially if you try another one and it works fine.
How do I stop my keyboard from typing special characters?
Go to the Control Panel and choose the Clock, Language, and Region group. Choose the language and then click on Advanced Settings. Find the option “Override on Default Input Method,” and from the drop-down menu, choose the language you want to use. Set the Override for Windows Display Language to the same language, click OK, and then restart your computer.
