If you need to How to Remotely Wake a Mac, you usually just walk over to it and tap the keyboard or click the mouse. However, if your Mac is a server in a locked closet, you may not be able to reach it. As a server, you probably don’t want to put the system to sleep, but there may be times when you can’t get to a system and need to wake it up.
Using a handy network feature in OS X that most modern Macs have, you can use an iPhone to wake a sleeping Mac from sleep (or iPod touch, iPad, and Android too). This is done with a feature called Wake On LAN (WOL), which is easy to set up in Mac OS X and can be controlled from a smartphone with a free app.
The result is pretty much the opposite of the remote sleep tricks we’ve talked about before. Instead of putting a machine to sleep remotely, you can wake it up remotely, making the Mac ready for general network access or just quicker use. Let’s talk about how to set up this.
How to Remotely Wake a Mac
Get an app called “Wake on LAN” for your iOS device. I’m using iNet WOL, a $1.99 app from the Mac App Store, in this tutorial. Make sure the Mac you want to wake up is on the same network as the iOS device before you continue.
When you first start iNet WOL, you’ll see a list of your favourite computers. To add computers to the list, look in the upper right corner of the screen and click on the white plus button.
Click the Search network for devices… button in the middle of the window to see all the devices on the network. Look under each device’s name and compare the IP address to the Mac’s IP address to find the computer you’re trying to wake up.
When you find the match, tap on the Mac to select it, and then tap the Add selected button in the lower left corner of the screen. If you click on the device’s name on the app’s home screen, you can wake up
