How to Setup Facebook Chat Within iChat, These days, it seems like everyone uses a different way to send messages. All iOS users probably use iMessage in some way, but all Android users may use Google Hangouts, especially if they have one of the newer versions of Android. But Facebook is another popular way to talk to people. So much so that Facebook has a separate app for messaging on both Android and iOS, as well as a desktop version for Windows PCs. But how does it work on a Mac?
There are at least 15 different third-party apps in the Mac App Store that claim to offer an instant messaging system for Facebook that doesn’t use the browser. Some of them aren’t that bad, but sometimes the easiest solution is the one that comes straight from the source. Facebook’s site tour says that you can use Facebook Messenger directly from Messages app.
How to Setup Facebook Chat Within iChat
- Launch iChat on the Mac if you haven’t done so yet
- From iChat, select the iChat menu and scroll down to “Preferences”
- Click on the “Accounts” tab icon and click the “+” sign in the corner to add a new account
- In the “Account Type” menu, select “Jabber” to enter information relative to your Facebook account
- Enter your Facebook Username (your username is in your vanity url, facebook.com/your_name), you can find or set your Facebook username by going here on Facebook.com
- Enter the password to your Facebook account
- Now under the “Server Options” settings, enter the server as ‘chat.facebook.com’ and the port as ‘5222’ (without quotes obviously)

Make sure your device has enough storage. Close your Messenger app and restart your device. Make sure the person you’re replying to hasn’t deactivated or deleted their account. Make sure you haven’t blocked the person you’re replying to and they haven’t blocked you.
