‘This cable or accessory is not certified’: The iPhones and iPads from Apple have their own Lightning connector for charging and sending data. You can buy cables and accessories from third parties, but they must be certified. When you connect a cable or accessory that Apple didn’t certify, you’ll see a warning message. But this message can also sometimes appear wrong.
Apple has a program called “MFi Certification Program.” “MFi” stands for “Made for iPhone,” “Made for iPad,” and “Made for iPod.” Accessories and cables made by third parties that say they’re “MFi certified” have been tested by Apple to make sure they work well with Apple’s hardware and are made well.
When iOS 7 came out, iPhones and iPads started to follow this rule. There is an authentication chip inside Lightning cables and other accessories. This authentication chip talks to your iPhone or iPad. That’s how your device knows if you’re using an Apple-approved cable or accessory or one that wasn’t put through Apple’s certification program.
Fix: ‘This cable or accessory is not certified’ On iPhone
Update Software on your iPhone
If the problem still persists, there is a small chance that it might be due to a software bug. And in this scenario, the software update is required. With every new update, Apple releases a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements to improve the overall experience of the iPhone. Therefore, head over to the Settings app -> General -> Software Update. If an update is available, download and install the latest iteration of iOS on your device.
Ensure That the Accessory is MFi Certified
Also, it’s important to make sure that the charging cable or headphones you use are either made by Apple or are MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad) certified. If you’re using a charger that wasn’t made by Apple or was made by someone else, there’s a good chance that’s what’s wrong.
You can get an MFi-certified iPhone charger from Amazon or Flipkart for about Rs. 1500–2000. A certified charger is better in terms of both safety and how well it works. That’s why you shouldn’t give up on it.
Clean the USB Port and the Accessory
The first thing you should do is clean out any gunk or smudges that might have gotten stuck in the charging port. It could be stopping the charging accessory from connecting well. So, make sure to clean the Lightning port. You can clean your iPhone’s Lightning port with canned air or a toothpick. Make sure to do it carefully so that you don’t damage the port while trying to get rid of the lint. If the pins get bent or broken, you can’t do anything but replace the jack.
Try Another Accessory
A broken accessory could cause a “accessory may not be supported” alert. Check the accessory for frays or changes in color. These are often signs that something is wrong with it. If your cable is acting up, you could borrow one from a neighbor or friend and try that instead. If it works, you can be sure that the problem wasn’t with your iPhone but with the accessory.
Why your iPhone says ‘This accessory may not be supported’?
There are a few reasons why this message appears on your device. It includes using:
- a faulty or damaged adaptor or cable
- a non-MFi-certified accessory
- an iPhone or iPad not updated to the latest iOS or iPadOS updated
- incompatible accessories
- a port that’s dirty or damaged\
