What are Amber alerts?
When a child is taken from their home, an AMBER Alert is sent out. It is sent to electronic highway signs, cell phones, ads on the Internet, and radio and TV shows that air regularly. Alerts are sent out in and around the area where the child was taken, but multi-state AMBER Alerts are sent out if police think the person who took the child has or may cross state lines with the child. AMBER Alerts let the police quickly ask the media and the public for help in finding a child who has been taken.
When did Amber Alerts start?
In 1996, 9-year-old Amber Hagerman was taken while riding her bike in Arlington, Texas. This led to the creation of the AMBER Alert system. Amber’s parents worked with local police, the FBI, and the media to find their daughter after a neighbor told them she had been taken. Amber did not make it through the kidnapping.
The case had a big effect on the people in the area. The AMBER Alert system was made by Hagerman’s parents, local police, and the Texas Association of Radio Managers working together. Even though the AMBER Alert is named after Hagerman, it is also an acronym for “America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response.”
