You want to move How to Upgrade the Firmware of Your SSD on Windows 11/10. we plan to use the old WD 1TB hard drive as a storage drive and the new SSD as the boot drive. Most of the time, there are two ways to put Windows 10 on an SSD. One is to clone Windows 11/10 from the source drive to the target drive, and the other is to reinstall Windows 11/10 on SSD from scratch, also called a clean install or fresh install.
Both are easy and effective ways to eventually boot Windows 10 from an SSD. After comparing, the first one is recommended as the better choice. Cloning Windows 10 from an HDD to an SSD is the easiest and fastest way to do this. Still, you might have to put in a little more work if you want to reinstall Windows 11/10 on an SSD.
You should know that Windows 10 is only free if you are upgrading from an earlier version of Windows. If you want to start from scratch, you should have a valid Windows 10 product key. If not, the best thing to do would be to clone the system partition to the SSD and then use a few clicks to move the Windows 10 OS to the SSD.

What is an SSD?
A solid-state drive (SSD) is a type of computer storage that is more recent. SSDs read and write data digitally by reading and writing to flash memory. SSDs are almost instant to boot up and load because they don’t have to search for data mechanically.
Hard disc drives (HDDs), which use a spinning platter and an arm that moves across the platter to read each piece of data, have been used to store data on computers for decades. HDDs are one of the most likely pieces of computer hardware to fail or break because they have parts that move. SSDs work in a completely different way. SSDs don’t have any moving parts because they are made with NAND flash memory chips. This makes them more durable.
What does an SSD do?
A solid-state drive (SSD) or hard disc drive (HDD) is your computer’s long-term memory. It stores and remembers files even when the computer is turned off. It works with your system’s memory (RAM) and processor to access and use data, such as your operating system, programmes, documents, games, pictures, and music.
- On your storage drive, you can find programmes and files, like the spreadsheet you want to open.
- When you open the spreadsheet, the processor moves the programme data from your storage SSD or HDD to your computer’s RAM for quick access and use. This is when SSDs really show their worth because they speed up the data transfer process, which is how long it takes to load programmes and files, compared to HDDs.
- The processor then pulls data from the RAM, which is like a bank of free space on your computer. The programme is then “run” by using the memory.
