To use Quick Look from Terminal, choose File > Quick Look “filename” (Command-Y) while a file is selected. Better yet, just click on a file and press the Space bar. In the picture below, Quick Look shows an image of an Apple Watch Edition. When Quick Look is open, you can click Open with App to open the file in the app that is used to open it by default. You can also send the file to another app or service without opening it by clicking the Share button in the upper right corner.
If the file you’re previewing with Quick Look has more than one page, you’ll see thumbnails on the right that you can scroll through with your mouse, trackpad, or the Page Up/Page Down keys (on a laptop, use Fn-Up Arrow and Fn-Down Arrow). Quick Look windows usually open to a size that works well, but you can change the size by dragging any edge. To close Quick Look, press the Space bar or Command-Y again, press Escape, or click the window’s close button in the upper left corner.
If you choose more than one file before using Quick Look, you can switch between them using the Left and Right arrow keys. There are also forward and back buttons in the top left corner of the Quick Look window. Next to these buttons is a button called “Thumbnail” that shows a grid of thumbnails of the selected files. If you click on a thumbnail, you can zoom in on that one item.
How to use Quick Look from Terminal
How? The key is qlmanage, a Unix programme that was added to OS X 10.5 and is now part of macOS. This programme was made for programmers who write Quick Look generators, but we can use it for our own needs. Type qlmanage -p somefile, where somefile is the full name of a file in the current directory, to see the Quick Look preview of any file.
After a lot of text has gone by in Terminal, the Gingerbread Man user picture will appear in a Quick Look window. It’s important to remember that this is not the Finder’s Quick Look window. In fact, if you switch to the Finder while the Terminal’s Quick Look window is still showing, you’ll see that you can open new Quick Look windows in the Finder.
