The Sennheiser HD 560S are wired open-back headphones for neutral listening. They fit most music genres and offer a balanced sound profile that should provide consistent audio. They are also very comfortable with a relatively lightweight design and lots of plush padding. Like most open backs, they are not suitable for on-the-go use, with terrible noise isolation, high levels of audio leakage, and bulky construction.
Otherwise, they are a great choice if you are looking for a pair of comfortable headphones with a neutral sound profile. The Sennheiser HD560S is best suited for neutral sound. They lack a bit of bass, but provide enough body and warmth for most mixes. Vocals and lead instruments are present and detailed and clear in the mix, and audio is delivered with impressive consistency. The soundstage is also well defined.
Due to the open-back design, considerable sound leakage (outside) is to be expected with the spacious audio presentation; the HD 560S packaging states that it is suitable for “analytical listening sessions,” a euphemism meaning “use it when you’re alone.” Listening to music can be a pleasure, but it can also be a very serious undertaking at times, and the HD 560S is, we believe, designed for the latter.
As the album plays, the sound is even, clear, and spacious. Bass is agile, although the more expensive Grado SR325e adds a bit more bass weight. But even considering the price difference, the Sennheisers don’t seem to convey enough of the vitality and enthusiasm we’ve come to know and love about recording. Sennheiser has an extensive back catalog of 5-star and award-winning headphones for over 50 years. This wired set of open-back over-ears is a valid addition that offers perfectly acceptable, detailed sound on a budget.
