The first generation Anker Soundcore Flare impressed us with its great sound, build quality, and surprisingly good app. For the second generation, Anker took the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach, keeping everything we loved about the first generation speaker and adding a few extra conveniences.
The Anker Soundcore Flare 2 is a good value compared to our other favorites like the UE Wonderboom 2 and the JBL Flip 5. All three are great, and while the UE Wonderboom 2 may be more rugged and able to swim in a pool, the Anker Soundcore Flare 2 fits better in the home with its sleek design without screaming “outdoor speaker.”
Ultimately, the Soundcore Flare 2 is just a minor refresh of the already great Flare, but for anyone in need of a Bluetooth speaker. The Anker Soundcore Flare 2 looks almost exactly like the first-generation model, but it also has an LED ring on top for more RGB color. The speaker moves some buttons, but users can still control music playback, volume, calls, pairing, and BassUp on the speaker itself. Additional lighting and EQ features can be accessed via Anker’s mobile app.
The Soundcore Flare 2 has the same fabric casing as its predecessor, giving it a modern yet rugged look. The speaker still has an IPX7 rating, which means it can survive up to 30 minutes in one meter of water. On the back is a rubber flap that covers the speaker’s USB-C port, replacing the original’s microUSB port. However, the Flare 2 no longer supports 3.5mm devices, which is a bit inconvenient.
A nice surprise is the excellent Soundcore app, which allows users to update the speaker and control additional features. Additional lighting features can be accessed in the app, allowing you to customize the colors as well as the reactive lighting. There are several modes to choose from or you can create your own. There is also a basic equalizer in the app, but most users will probably enjoy the speaker’s default sound or the BassUp feature, which has a dedicated button on the back of the speaker.
The sound quality is great and provides a good balance across the frequency spectrum. The Anker’s sound is slightly warm, which makes it very enjoyable at low to medium volumes. The Anker Soundcore Flare 2 can get very loud, but like the original, the sound quality suffers the louder the speaker gets. This is to be expected with small wireless speakers that don’t have the amperage of larger speakers. The Flare 2 sounds best at volumes below 70%, which is still sufficient for a small to medium sized room.
