The Canon EOS Rebel T7/EOS 2000D is an APS-C sensor DSLR camera for beginners. It’s better than its predecessor, the Canon EOS Rebel T6/EOS 1300D, because it has a higher-resolution 24-megapixel sensor, but it doesn’t change anything else about the way it works. That’s not a bad thing for photographers who want a simple and affordable DSLR, but don’t expect extras like a touchscreen that moves or the ability to shoot 4K video.
The new EOS Rebel T7 is one of the smallest DSLRs on the market, just like the T6. It is 5.1 by 3.9 by 3.1 inches and weighs 1.75 pounds with the battery and SD card. The grip is made of textured rubber to make it easy and safe to hold. The rest of the T7’s body is mostly made of plastic, which is not surprising given how cheap it is.
Even though the on/off switch and four-way controller keys are stiff, buttons and dials are easy to find. With external controls, you can change the most important shooting settings like ISO, white balance, focus, and drive modes with just one touch.
With the Q button and the quick menu, you won’t need to use the full menu system very often. But if you do, you’ll find that the internal menu is organised in a way that makes sense, with color-coded sections for shooting, playing back, and setting up. There is also an option called “My Menu” that lets you save and access up to six of your most used settings.
This camera has a Digic 4 Plus image processor, which improves the quality of pictures by processing high-ISO pictures quickly — 60% faster than its predecessor. The T7 also has Wi-Fi built in, so you can connect it to your phone, a printer, the Canon Image Gateway, or even another camera. Lastly, this camera works with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses, so you can find the perfect lens for portraits, nature photography, or anything else your creative heart desires.
The camera isn’t too hard to hold, but people with very large hands might find the grip a little too small. But the handle is nice and smooth, and the thumb rest is in the right place. The simple controls and single command dial make it easy for new users to use, but when shooting in manual mode, it makes it harder to change settings on the fly. The OVF is a good size, but the rubber eyecup that goes around it can get annoying after a while.
The Canon T7 doesn’t have a bad battery life. Canon’s website doesn’t say how long the battery should last, but the T7 is said to have a CIPA rating of 600 shots. It’s not nearly as good as the Canon EOS Rebel SL3, which has a better battery. On the other hand, the video battery isn’t very good. You’ll be able to record video for about an hour straight.
