The book The Hum by Colgate has 4.5 stars out of 5. Reviewers who like the Hum talk about how light it is, how easy it is to take with you, and how the app shows you how well you brush. One reviewer said, “The toothbrush cleans, gets rid of, and cuts down on plaque perfectly.”
The Colgate Hum is well worth its (relatively low) price and a great choice if you want an electric toothbrush, especially if you want one that can track how often you brush through an app. It’s a lot cheaper than other brands that also have Bluetooth, and we loved that it has three brush modes that are easy to tell apart by the different colours of LED lights.
If you’ve used other electric toothbrushes, you’ll immediately notice that the Hum is much smaller and lighter, which makes brushing much more comfortable all around. It is 8 inches tall and weighs only 1.85 ounces. My Philips Sonicare is 10 inches tall and weighs 4.95 ounces, and the Oral-B iO is about 9 inches tall and weighs 4.9 ounces.
When you hold the Hum, it feels more like a small manual toothbrush than a big electric one. The bristles on the head of the brush are also smaller, which was something that bothered me at first. How could this clean my teeth well, we asked ourselves. But I soon realised that the small size meant I could reach the back of my teeth without hurting my gums and brush farther back on my tongue without feeling like I was going to throw up. Speaking of which, there is a tongue brush on the back of the brush head.
The model that can be charged has three brushing modes: normal, sensitive, and deep clean. The model that uses batteries only has the first two modes. This smart brush has less modes than most others, but I think having too many modes is overkill. The vibration is low in the sensitive mode, it gets stronger in the normal mode, and it gets stronger again in the deep clean mode.
Other brushes’ modes almost all feel and sound the same, but the Hum’s modes are very different. On its deep-clean mode, it doesn’t vibrate so intensely that it feels like your skull is shaking. The company also says that the battery-powered brush does 20,000 strokes per minute and the rechargeable one does 30,000. If you use the battery every day, a single charge should last about 10 days. That’s a good amount of time, but it’s not as long as some other brushes.
