Does your Mac Need More Memory? How to Know if you Need a RAM Upgrade Tutorial and Steps

So here we discuss the Does your Mac Need More Memory? How to Know if you Need a RAM Upgrade, and after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Does your Mac Need More Memory? How to Know if you Need a RAM Upgrade.

Does your Mac need more memory? How do you know that? When a Mac needs more RAM, it will often slow down and you will experience a noticeable performance hit. This can affect everything from the speed of the computer to how long it takes to launch apps, to sluggishness when dealing with apps, and more. If you are experiencing any of these types of issues it could be RAM limitations but let’s actually learn instead of guessing how to check memory usage.

Here’s a three step process to determine if a Mac user needs additional memory. This method will help you determine if you also need more memory for your Mac, so let’s move on.

How to Tell if a Mac needs more RAM

What we’re going to do is use the affected Mac and then check active memory usage while it’s in use. This is an easy way to determine if a Mac would benefit from a RAM upgrade (most will!).

Step 1) Use your Mac – Continue with the activities you typically perform on your Mac. If you use your Mac for a lot of Photoshop work, open several documents in Photoshop and adjust them as you normally would. If you are an avid internet user, open up your favorite web browser (s) and load up so many websites in different tabs and windows representing your typical Mac usage. Just use your Mac as usual and let those programs run.

Step 2) Start Activity Monitor and observe the memory usage – now that you’ve been using your Mac, leaving all documents and applications open, you want to look at what is basically your Mac Task Manager, also called Activity Monitor. Here’s how:

  • Start “Activity Monitor” in / Applications / Utilities /
  • Click on the “System Memory” tab at the bottom

Let’s see what Activity Monitor tells us.

The memory pie chart – First you want to look at the pie chart. To make it simple, a lot of red and yellow indicates high RAM usage, while a lot of green and blue indicates that there is a lot of free and idle RAM available for the operating system.

In the screenshot below you can see that there is practically no green in the pie chart and red and yellow take on up over 3/4 of the pie, this is a pretty good indication that more physical RAM is needed.

how to tell if mac needs more ram

Page-ins versus page-out – View not only the memory pie chart, but also your page ins versus page exits. If you have a large number of page outs to page ins, you probably need more RAM. I always do a quick calculation. If page outs are 10% or more page ins in normal computer use, I recommend a memory upgrade. In the screenshot above, page outs represent 17% of page ins. This user would benefit from more available system memory.

You may remember that paging is the Mac virtual memory system, which essentially uses your hard drive as virtual RAM when the real thing runs out. Virtual memory is great feature, but it is significantly slower than physical RAM, and a lot of page usage will cause system slowdowns.

Step 3) Buy a RAM upgrade if you need it – If you have determined that adding additional RAM to your Mac would be useful, then it is a good idea to buy more RAM to upgrade the Mac. Memory is relatively cheap these days, and increasing your memory can often provide significant performance gains for a computer, so I’m inclined to think that the more memory you have, the better.

There are plenty of good places to get memory, if you don’t want to install it yourself just take your Mac to your local Apple Store and let them handle it all for you. You pay quite a bit more this way, but many novice tech users prefer this method.

If you’re a bit more tech-savvy and a do-it-yourself person, buy your own RAM from an online store and install it yourself. You save a lot of money, and it usually only takes a few screws and 15-20 minutes from start to completion. A good place to compare prices and buy RAM is Amazon, they host a large number of suppliers, offer free shipping, and have neutral user reviews to determine the quality of the supplier. Overall it’s a good thing if you can max out a Mac’s RAM, so get as much RAM as you can afford it will boost performance and you’ll thank yourself for the improvement.
