Clearing your web browser’s data, such as your history or cache and cookies, on your Mac is an essential step towards protecting your privacy. If you’re concerned about snooping, clearing your browsing history can help prevent others from discovering which websites you’ve visited. This article explains how to clear browsing history on your Mac using the four most popular Mac browsers: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.
If you want to prevent your browser from collecting history data in the first place, you can use the private browsing feature on Mac.
Clearing history in Safari
In Safari, you can click on Safari > Clear History or History > Clear History to access the Clear History tool. You can choose to clear the last hour, all the files collected today, today plus yesterday, or clear all data since the beginning of time from the drop-down list and click Clear History. Note that this tool deletes not only your browsing history but also your cache and cookies.
To remove individual websites from your Safari history, click on History > View All History, right-click on any website on the list, and select Delete. You can also use the Backspace or Delete key on your keyboard to delete selected items. Remember, right-clicking doesn’t work in this case.
Clearing history in Chrome
To view your browsing history in Chrome, choose History > View Full History. You can delete particular entries on a per-item basis by clicking the checkbox to the left of it, then clicking Delete in the blue bar at the top, and confirming the deletion. If you prefer to delete your entire history at once, click on Clear browsing Data in the options list on the left.
Clearing history in Firefox
In Firefox, select History > Clear Recent History or press Shift + Cmd + Delete Forward to clear your browsing data. You can choose a time range from the Last Hour, Last 2 Hours, Last 4 Hours, Today, or Everything, and which types of data you want to delete. To remove individual websites from your Firefox history, click History > View All History, right-click on an item, and select Delete Page.
Clearing history in Opera
To clear your entire browsing history at once in Opera, click Clear browsing Data on the top right of the history page. You can choose a time frame and select whether to delete your cookies, autofill forms, and other data along with your history. To delete individual items in your history, select History > Show All History and click the X on the right of each item.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does clearing browsing history make my Mac faster?
Clearing your browsing history can help free up some space on your Mac, which might help it run faster. However, the effect is usually minimal since clearing your browsing data doesn’t necessarily free up a lot of storage space or speed up your Mac’s processor.
Will clearing browsing history remove bookmarks saved on my Mac?
Clearing your browsing history will not remove your saved bookmarks. Bookmarks are stored separately from your browsing history and can be deleted separately through their respective bookmark managers.
