Torrenting has been a popular way for people to share content online, from movies to software. While MacOS users have easy accessibility to torrenting programs, it’s a bit more difficult for iPad users. Some apps in the App Store tend to facilitate the sharing of illegal content via this method. However, it is still possible to download torrents on your iPad without jailbreaking it.
Before we dive in, please note that torrenting can be a hit-or-miss experience. The nature of the site and its dependence on the user for source sharing can make it unpredictable. But if you are confident and ready, let’s get started.
Are Torrent Files Legal?
Torrenting is a practice that has been developed to make sharing large files online easier. The principle behind this is to break down files into small parts that can be downloaded from various sources, including users who host files on their personal computers and online-based servers. This divides the burden of providing the data, typically resulting in faster downloads. However, torrenting is also known for sharing copyrighted material. While some creators use it to legally distribute their work, ripped data from recent Hollywood blockbusters and chart-topping albums can also appear. We do not condone downloading this stolen material.
How to Find a Torrent File
You need to search for a torrent file before you can download anything. A torrent file is a special link that torrenting software uses to pull together the various parts of the file from different servers or peers. The most popular torrent site is The Pirate Bay, but for this article, we will use Legit Torrents – a site for legally available, free content. Go to your preferred torrent website using your iPad’s web browser and search for the file you want to download. Make sure you get a healthy number of seeders, often indicated by the ‘S’, ‘SL’, or ‘Seed’ columns.
Once you find what you want, tap on the item to open it in a new page, or you can choose “Open in New Tab.” If you have a full list of file names, tap and hold on the highlighted Torrent or Torrents link for more options.
How to Download a Torrent File to Your iPad
Special software is required to download files using a torrent-file, but you won’t find it in the App Store. Instead, we’ll use a web-based solution like Torrentsafe, ZbigZ or Bitport. For this tutorial, we’ll use Torrentsafe.
After you’ve created your free account, go to your preferred torrent website using your iPad’s web browser, then tap on the file to download it. Make sure to choose the option to download the torrent file, then save it somewhere you can remember and open in a new browser window.
Next, go to Torrentsafe, select “Add .torrent file”, and navigate to the file you just saved. Once you’ve selected the torrent file, select “Download It Now!” Wait for the download to complete and save the file to a cloud storage service like iCloud or My Files on your iPad or iPhone. You can then open the file with any app relevant to that file type such as a video can be played using the video player, and so on.
Now you know how to download torrents on your iPad without jailbreaking it. However, if you don’t want to mess with torrents, you can check out our tutorial on How to Watch Free Movies on Your iPad, iPhone, or iPad for alternative methods.
