GarageBand, a free music creation tool, is one of the best apps available for iPhones and iPads. It allows you to easily create songs with drums, bass, keyboards, guitars, and other unique instruments without any prior knowledge of music. Here are some basics to guide you through Apple’s top software.
Live Loops
Live Loops is a new addition to GarageBand for sequencing existing recordings in real time. Choose the music genre you want to use and start playing with it. Each square on the grid represents a loop that works together in both timing and melody. FX is another great feature that allows you to produce fantastic sounds when recording.
Record Live Loops
After playing with Live Loops, it’s time to record them. Press the record button, play the loops in order, and stop after finishing. Your song is recorded and can be played back anytime.
Tap Instruments
If you want to be more hands-on when creating melodies, you can use Touch Instruments. Select the Tracks option when starting a new project and scroll to choose the one you want to use. A new window will open with a digital view of the instrument.
Use Keyboards
For keyboards, the keys themselves are the main controls with a row of options above. Other interesting features include a left and right arrow, which raises or lowers the pitch of the keyboard by an octave.
Use the Scale Function
To easily arrange notes in a way that fits different types of music, use the Scale function. After selecting a scale, the keyboard will be simplified with only the notes in that scale or mode left, making it impossible to play wrong notes.
Use the Arpeggiator Function
The Arpeggiator function offers you different options, such as Note Order, Note Rate, and Octave Range to adjust the speed and order of played notes. Tap any part of the screen except the keyboard to hear the order
