Do you want to know how to link or unlink a device on Dropbox? Basic Dropbox users can only sync up to three devices at once, so you may want to disconnect some of your devices. You have the most control over your linked devices when you manage them on the Dropbox website.
However, you can stop syncing on your other devices by logging out of the Dropbox app. If you do, you probably use your smartphone, PC, laptop, tablet, and probably a lot of other things to get to your Dropbox. In today’s post, we’ll talk about how to link or unlink a device to your Dropbox account.
This is very important for people who use Dropbox’s free version. Dropbox is a cloud storage service that lets you back up photos, videos, and files so you can get to them from any computer, phone, or tablet. You can let other people in the world see your photos, videos, and files.
How to link a device on Dropbox
On dropbox.com
- Sign in to dropbox.com with either your team or personal account credentials.
- Click your avatar (photo or initials) in the top right.
- Click Settings.
- Click the General tab.
- Click Link accounts next to Link your personal account or Link your team account.
On the Dropbox desktop app
- Open your Dropbox desktop preferences.
- Click the Account tab.
- Click Add personal account or Add team account.
- If you don’t see this option, your admin may have disabled it.
On the Dropbox iOS app
- Open the Dropbox iOS app.

How to unlink a device on Dropbox
Only at dropbox.com can you break the link between your accounts. If you unlink your accounts, they are no longer linked anywhere. You will be signed out of the last account you added to that app on all apps and devices, but you will stay signed in to the first account.
You can always sign back into your accounts on any device, just like you can with any account that isn’t linked. To unlink your accounts:
- Sign in to dropbox.com with either account.
- Click your avatar (photo or initials) in the top right.
- Click Settings.
- Click the General tab.
- Click Unlink next to Linked accounts.
- Click Yes, unlink to confirm.
About Dropbox
For those not familiar with Dropbox, it offers cloud storage, file synchronization, and a personal cloud, with files available through a web browser or through an app for computers, tablets, and cell phones. On the user’s computer, Dropbox creates a special folder.
The contents of that folder are then synced to Dropbox’s servers and other devices on which the user has installed Dropbox. This ensures that the same files are kept up-to-date on all devices. Dropbox offers a free version with 2GB of storage and a paid version to meet the needs of home and business users.
Until a few days ago, Dropbox allowed unlimited devices to be synced to all accounts, but that has now changed for users of the free version of Dropbox. This is another reason why you want to understand how to manage device syncing.
