We show you how to Organize Photos on Mac so you can find the ones you want. If you’re like us, you probably take a lot of pictures every year. The sad thing is that many people don’t look at these photos very often, and when they do, the sheer number of photos can make it hard to keep looking.
We need a way to sort through our huge photo libraries to find the photos we want to look at and even share with friends and family. Many of us wait until our photo libraries are so big that they take up most of our cloud storage before we start sharing them. We get too many warnings that tell us to buy more storage.
But who wants to pay money to keep screenshots and bad photos from a year ago?! The best way to keep track of your photos is to go through them often. Most of the time, you know you won’t keep a photo or screenshot right after you take it. You can also go to the official Apple support site to know more information.
Ways to Organize Photos on Mac
Switch Your Photo Library
Your system might have more than just the Photos library. For example, pictures taken with your computer’s webcam are kept in a different library and in different places on your computer. You can, however, change the main photo library directly on your Photos app by going to its settings and changing the main photo library there. Here are the steps:
- Open Finder.
- Click Applications from the sidebar.
- Hold Option and open Photos.
- On the Choose Library window that appears, click on Other Library.
- Select the required library and click on Open.
Group by People & Places
On the Photos app, you can choose to put your pictures into groups based on People or Places. You can get to these options from the left sidebar of your app. With the People feature of the Photos app, all the faces of the people in your photo library are automatically scanned, and the photos are put into groups based on the faces in them.
You can give these picture groups more names by clicking on “Unnamed” and typing the name you want. Places is another part of the Photos app that lets you group photos based on where you clicked on them. But not every picture automatically has a place or location linked to it. So, you can add location data to the photos in your library by hand. This is what you do:
- On the Photos app, click on Library from the sidebar.
- Open the image you want to assign a location on.
- Click the Info icon from the ribbon menu.
- Click on Assign a Location.
- Type the related location and select it from the drop-down list.
- Here, you also have the option to Add Faces. However, as mentioned above, the application automatically scans and groups the faces on the People tab.
View Photos From the Photo Library
All of the media files you’ve added to your Photos app are in the library. You can sort and view these pictures and videos by Years, Months, or Days. If you choose to do this, the app will put together all the photos you took or edited during that time. But not all of the pictures on your Mac will show up in the Photos app by default.
That’s because your iCloud account can sync all the media files in your Photos app. If you do this, you’ll be able to watch all of those media files on different devices that use the same Apple ID. You can also turn on or off iCloud sync whenever you want. Taking all of this into account, here’s how you can add photos to the Photos app:
- Open Photos.
- From the menu bar, click on File > Import.
- Choose the required images and Import them.
- This image can now be accessed from your Photos Library.
Get Creative With Memories
Memories is a fun way to organize and look at your media files. It makes a slideshow of the chosen pictures while music plays in the background. You can also change how quickly or slowly the slideshow moves.
The Photos app automatically makes memories based on information about an image, like the time or place where it was clicked on. You can, however, also choose images from your photo library and create memories of them by hand. Follow the steps below to set up a new memory:
- Open Photos.
- Then, open an album from under My Album.
- Inside the album, click on Play Memory Video.
- From the preview window’s ribbon bar, click on the Options icon and select Edit Title.
- Set a new name for your memory and Save it.
- To add this to Memories, click the Favourites icon on the same ribbon bar.
