Snap has moved its SPECS augmented reality glasses closer to a consumer launch, opening preorders for the $2,195 wearable while Verizon prepares cellular data plans for the connected version. The glasses are designed as a standalone AR computer rather than a conventional smart-glasses accessory that depends on a phone for its main processing. Snap says SPECS can place digital information into the user’s field of view, respond to voice and hand interactions and run experiences covering navigation, translation, entertainment, education, shopping and work. The company has also introduced SPECS Intelligence, an anticipatory AI service intended to work across the glasses, iPhone and Mac. The launch puts Snap in a competitive market where smart glasses are increasingly being positioned as a new computing interface rather than simply a camera mounted in eyewear.

A standalone AR computer in a pair of glasses
Snap describes SPECS as a new type of computer built directly into see-through augmented reality glasses. The hardware includes computing processors, cameras, sensors, speakers and displays in the frame, removing the external compute puck used by some earlier AR prototypes. Snap says the system can let users interact through their hands and voice while keeping their attention on the physical world.
The glasses use two Snapdragon processors and include both full-color and infrared computer-vision cameras, and inertial sensors. Snap lists a 51-degree field of view and a stereo waveguide display. The company compares the visual area to a 115-inch display viewed from about ten feet away. That comparison is useful for explaining the scale of the virtual content, although the actual experience depends on brightness, environment and how much of the user’s field of view the digital objects occupy.
Preorder price starts at $2,195
Snap is pricing SPECS at $2,195, with a $200 refundable deposit required for preorder. Shipping is expected to begin later in the fall in the United States, United Kingdom and France. The company is also planning an in-person demonstration location at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles beginning October 1.
The price puts SPECS in a very different category from camera-first smart glasses. The device is attempting to function as a spatial computer, which requires substantially more hardware than a pair of glasses designed mainly for audio, cameras and voice commands. The cost will nevertheless be one of the main questions for consumers because the glasses remain a relatively early product category.
Verizon brings cellular connectivity through the charging case
Verizon is provideing a connected version of the SPECS charging case with 5G connectivity. The bundle costs $2,395, and Verizon says connected wearable data plans start at $10 per month for Verizon customers and $20 per month for non-Verizon customers. Eligible buyers can also use a 36-month payment plan.
The approach is technically interesting because the cellular hardware is placed in the case instead of making the glasses themselves depend on a large cellular radio and antenna system. Users can So keep the glasses relatively self-contained while carrying the connected case for extended use. The trade-off is that the case becomes an important part of the untethered experience.
Battery life remains a practical constraint
Snap and Verizon list up to four hours of mixed-use battery life for SPECS. The charging case provides multiple additional charges, and the case can also provide the cellular connection. Four hours is enough for a substantial trip or part of a working session, but it is not comparable with the battery life users expect from a smartphone.
AR displays, cameras, wireless connectivity and continuous computing all consume power. The system So has to balance visual brightness, processor activity and wireless communication against battery capacity and heat. The charging case is one way of making the hardware usable for longer periods, but it also means that the complete product experience includes another device that users need to carry.
SPECS Intelligence adds an AI layer
Snap’s newest announcement adds SPECS Intelligence, an anticipatory AI service designed to work across iPhone, Mac and the SPECS glasses. Snap says the service can build an understanding of goals, priorities, relationships and routines from the apps and tools that a user chooses to connect. Instead of waiting for every instruction, it can surface information and actions when they may be useful.
That concept changes the role of an AI assistant. A conventional chatbot is primarily reactive, while an anticipatory assistant attempts to understand longer-running context. The potential benefit is less repetitive prompting, but the trade-off is that the system needs access to more personal information. Snap’s model So makes permissions, privacy and user control central to whether SPECS Intelligence can become a useful everyday service.
AR experiences go beyond notifications
Snap is launching SPECS with experiences that cover entertainment, education, shopping, navigation, translation and fitness. The company is also developing Connected Lenses, which allow compatible users to share AR experiences in the same physical space. This could allow two people wearing SPECS to see and interact with digital objects that are aligned with the same environment.
The difference from ordinary smartphone applications is the spatial presentation. A navigation instruction can appear in the user’s surroundings instead of requiring the user to look down at a map. A shopping experience can place a digital object in a physical room. Educational applications can attach information to a location or object. These examples are central to Snap’s argument that AR glasses can reduce the amount of time people spend looking at traditional screens.
Snap is also targeting workplaces
Snap is not limiting SPECS to entertainment. The company has announced enterprise partnerships involving Salesforce, NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services. Salesforce’s Agentforce can provide access to enterprise data and tasks, while NVIDIA technology can support visual understanding and AWS contributes voice-assistant capabilities. Snap has also announced partnerships with Trifork and Hololight.
Workplace applications may be important because businesses can justify expensive specialized hardware more easily than individual consumers. A technician who needs instructions while keeping both hands free, a warehouse worker checking product information or a retail employee retrieving inventory data could use an AR display without constantly looking down at a phone. Snap is So positioning SPECS as a productivity device and a consumer wearable.
Privacy is part of the product design
Camera-equipped glasses raise privacy questions that ordinary phones do not create in quite the same way. Snap says SPECS have a visible recording indicator and do not use facial recognition. The company has also said that the glasses are designed around controlled capture rather than continuous recording of everything around the wearer.
Those measures do not eliminate social concerns. A person nearby still has to understand when a wearable is recording, and users need to know what information an AI service can access from connected accounts. The more useful SPECS becomes, the more important those boundaries become because an assistant that can see, hear and understand context has access to a broader stream of information than a conventional app.
The larger AR market is getting crowded
Snap is entering a market that includes Meta’s camera-first smart glasses, Apple’s spatial-computing products and other companies working on AI and AR eyewear. SPECS occupies a more ambitious part of the category because it includes a built-in display and can operate as a computer rather than only as an audio and camera companion.
The company is also taking a different commercial approach by combining consumer experiences with enterprise partnerships and carrier connectivity. That strategy could give Snap several paths to adoption, but it also increases the number of requirements the product has to meet. Consumers need useful applications, enterprises need reliable workflows, and carriers need a practical connectivity model.
What the SPECS preorder tells us
The preorder launch is an important step because it moves SPECS from developer demonstrations into a product that consumers can actually order. The $2,195 starting price and four-hour mixed-use battery life make the device an early-adopter product rather than a direct replacement for a phone or laptop. The connected case adds recurring cellular costs for users who want an untethered connection.
Snap’s broader bet is that computing can move from a rectangle held in the hand to a display integrated with the physical environment. SPECS provides the hardware, Snap is building the AR software ecosystem, and SPECS Intelligence adds a cross-device AI layer. Whether that combination becomes an everyday platform will depend on battery life, comfort, software quality, privacy controls and the usefulness of the applications that arrive after launch.
