We were so excited when Acer told me about the new Chromebook Vero 514. I’m kind of a Chromebook fan because we like how simple they are. This is the first Chromebook in the company’s Vero line of eco-friendly laptops, which is great news for people who care about the environment. This machine is made from recycled materials, so not only are you reducing your e-waste, but you’re also getting pretty good hardware for the price.

The Acer Chromebook Vero 514 has a lot to offer. It has a fast CPU and a bright 1080p screen. The battery life is good, and the fact that the outside isn’t painted makes it stand out. Even the box it comes in is mostly made of recycled cardboard and paper. But the sound quality isn’t great and you have to use ChromeOS.

Acer Chromebook Vero 514 review: Design and Display
The Vero 514 is well-made and has an attractive “cobblestone” finish. Like other Vero models, Acer says that 30% of the main chassis is made from recycled plastic, and 50% of the keycaps and speakers are also made from recycled plastic. Still, it’s built well. In fact, Acer says it meets the US military standard MIL-STD-810H for resistance to dust, rain, and other environmental problems.
The laptop is 20.5mm thick and weighs 1.4kg, so it’s not quite “ultra-portable.” However, it’s still thin and light enough that you can quickly slip it into a backpack or bag when you’re traveling, and it’s sturdy enough to handle a few bumps along the way. The keyboard could be a little firmer, and the individual keys feel a little soft as you type. You can buy this laptop from its official website.
Acer Chromebook Vero 514 review: Connectivity
Connectivity is also good, with the most up-to-date Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1. There is an HDMI port for connecting an external display, as well as two USB-C ports and one USB-A port for connecting other devices. It even has a 1920 x 1080 webcam that is bright and clear. Our only complaint is that the stereo speakers sound a little thin, so when listening to music or watching videos, you might want to use headphones or a set of external speakers.
Acer Chromebook Vero 514 review: Performance and battery Life
Its Geekbench 5 scores reflect this, and while they aren’t mind-blowing, they are still better than Windows-powered laptops with similar prices, like the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2, which is one of our favorite cheaper laptops. You can do some more intensive tasks with 8GB of RAM.
The Acer Chromebook Vero 514 will get you through a workday and more. On the Laptop Mag Battery Test, the Vero 514 lasted 9 hours and 59 minutes of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, which is longer than the average Chromebook (9:37). The Dragonfly was the first one to die, but the Duet 5 and Spin 714 lasted much longer than the Vero.
Acer Chromebook Vero 514 review: Price and availability
The Vero 514 starts at $499.99/£499.00 for a model with an i3 processor, but, as we’ve already said, our review model had a faster i5-1235U processor. This i5 model costs $599.99 in the US, or $799.99 if you want to add a touchscreen. In the UK, you can only get the model with a touchscreen, which costs £699.
Final Words
There’s no doubt that the Acer Chromebook Vero 514 doesn’t do everything well. Its connectivity isn’t great, and the screen isn’t great either. But it fights back in other ways. It has a 12th Gen Intel processor, which makes it one of the fastest Chromebooks out there.
It has a good keyboard and trackpad, and the battery lasts all day. Even though it’s not the only eco-friendly laptop on the market, it’s a good choice if you want your tech to be green. Often, the price is right, too.
