Acer Spin 5 Review: For those who’re looking for a Core U laptop with a compact case, convertible form-factor, and an affordable price, then you want to check out the Acer Spin 5, a device that’s already available in shops and sells for $499 and up in the US and 599 EUR and up in Europe.
The Spin 5 is flexible, has a nice screen, is powerful sufficient and has the price we’re after. However, it’s not built like a MacBook. Does that matter for the cash?

Design
You shouldn’t forget how much this prices if you get it out of the box, cause the Acer Spin 5 is a little chubby and mostly built out of plastic. However, I am for sure biased by the truth that I usually review notebooks with thinner profiles and more premium materials. So when you’re a regular user coming from a regular laptop, you’ll probably find this one fairly good looking and compact.
Keyboard and Touchpad
I just like the keyboard on this laptop. However, I also assume most of you might not feel identical, and that’s because it’s shallow and its keys have quick travel. I’m handled to shallow keyboards, and this one here gives stiff keys with a good amount of resistance, and that’s why I assume it types better than my XPS 13.
On to the trackpad, it’s placed below the space key in the middle of the laptop, it’s built out of plastic, that means it’s has a little rougher and less glide texture than the glass choices, and it’s an Elan Pad surface.
Display
The 13.3-inch display has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels (Full HD), which is average in this section. The rivals also use FHD screens, together with the more costly sibling Acer Spin 7. The LC screen with the designation B133HAB01.0 is based on the AHVA technology, which is AUO’s counterpart of IPS.
Audio and Graphics
The sound output via built-in speakers is pretty typical for a compact notebook: tinny, without bass, and distorted at higher volumes. The latter is pretty high compared to different notebooks. The MacBook we use for the comparability is on one other stage.
The Intel HD Graphics 520 (GT2) is a built-in graphics unit, which can be found in varied ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processors of the Skylake generation.
Hardware and Performance
Sensible, the Spin 5 series is built on Intel Skylake Core U with M.2 SATA 80 mm SSD storage and 4 or 8 GB of DDR4 RAM. However, Kaby Lake Core U configurations are also available in some areas.
Now, efficiency is solid with the Spin 5 tested here. However, the re’s a fair amount of bloatware preinstalled and you must either take rid of it or better still do a clean Windows install when you get the laptop.
Battery Life
With a 48 Wh battery, Core U and an FHD screen, the Spin 5 is cable of going for 8-4 hours of daily use on a charge simply, as you’ll be able to see below (the screen was set at 60% brightness, roughly 120 nits). Acer bundles the laptop including a standard 45 W power brick, and a full recharge needs around 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Configuration Option
Costs in Europe are a little higher, with the base version selling 549 GBP in the UK and around for 599 EUR in Germany, however with only 4 GB of RAM and the Core i3-6100U processor. Whereas the mid-level option goes for 749 EUR in Germany and contains the Kaby Lake Core i7-7200U processor, 256 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM.
Conclusion
We can suggest the Acer Spin 5. There are lots of positive aspects; only the keyboard falls a bit short. The biggest benefits are the emissions with the quiet fan and the low temperatures. The test model effects with the quiet fan, the nice cooling performance as well as the precise touchpad in particular. The screen, the chassis, and the battery runtimes are all average and don’t reveal any serious flaws.
