Apple recently had its Wonderlust hardware event, at which the company introduced a number of new products, the most notable of which was the new iPhone 15 series. Even if the decision by Apple to replace the Lightning connector on its smartphones with USB-C was the topic that generated the most news, the thing that drew my attention the most was the exclusive features that were included in the iPhone 15 Pro versions.
Specifically, the features that are geared toward gaming that are included on Apple’s newest flagship smartphone. In comparison to the other iPhone models, the iPhone 15 Pro gives the “Pro” label a significantly greater amount of prominence. Apple is seeking to take a more serious approach to its hardware and how it performs in the gaming area, and the new A17 Pro CPU and the gaming-centric capabilities it possesses suggest that the company is making progress toward this goal.

Apple iPhone 15: Design
The front design of Apple’s iPhone 15 deviates significantly from the company’s earlier entry-level flagship models, and this is the difference that stands out the most. The dreaded notch has been replaced with something called the Dynamic Island, which was a feature that was initially introduced with the Pro models the year before. This modification brings the front of all of the iPhone models into conformity with one another.
Apple has made some improvements to the iPhone 15’s rear panel, but the device still has its trademark boxy shape thanks to the fact that it has the same familiar flat sides and display as previous models. It now has what is believed to be the first color-infused back glass panel offered with a matte finish in the market.
Additionally, the device’s edges have a tiny curve to them, lending a touch of elegance to the device’s overall appearance. This curve is located where the glass meets the aluminum frame. It is hoped that the use of this matte surface will reduce the amount of unattractive fingerprints that form on the rear of the phone, so improving both the device’s aesthetics and its functionality.
Apple iPhone 15: Display
The iPhone 15’s screen is kind of a mixed bag. Dynamic Island, which used to only be available on Pro models, is now available on less expensive models with all of its software functions and features, such as Live Activities, which show live information from apps. This could tell you where to go next in Maps, how long until your flight starts boarding, the state of your food delivery, and more.
Apple has chosen to keep the refresh rate of the iPhone 15’s screen at 60Hz. This is likely to get more people to buy one of the more expensive models. This is possibly the biggest disappointment that was expected, but it still hurts to see that it’s true.
Most Android phones in this price range have had displays with a higher update rate for years, so it’s hard not to see this as a major flaw in the iPhone 15. If you’re coming from an older iPhone that isn’t a Pro, you might not see this as a problem or a deal-breaker, but if you’ve ever seen how smooth a 120Hz or even 90Hz screen refresh rate is, you know what a loss this is.
The display stays the same in every other way, with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen that has a pixel resolution of 2532 x 1170 and a pixel density of 457 PPI. Add to that the higher 1600 nits peak HDR brightness and 2000 nits peak outdoor brightness, which is 2x more than the iPhone 14, and you have a really good-looking display in your hands, despite its one obvious flaw.
Apple iPhone 15: Cameras
Even though the camera system on the iPhone 15 looks the same as it did on the iPhone 14 and 13, it has a big secret. The main camera, which has been 12MP for a long time, is taking a page from the iPhone 14 Pro’s book and moving up to a huge 48MP sensor.
This is the first time that pixel binning has been added to the normal iPhone photography recipe. Along with better shooting in all conditions, including low light, this should also improve the quality of 2x zoomed photos and portrait photos. Not to mention that both stills and videos are more stable.
More importantly, the iPhone 15 can now take 24MP photos that blend the best information from 12MP with all the details from the new 48MP sensor. You also get an effective 2x optical zoom, which is not a zoom lens but takes the middle 12MP out of the same 48MP picture.
Apple iPhone 15: Software
Compared to the more substantial additions released by the business in iOS 16, iOS 17 seems like a tiny upgrade. However, there are a handful of note that help improve the user experience on the iPhone 15. Live Voicemail (complete with transcription), Interactive Widgets, Contact Posters, NameDrop, and the automatic blurring of nudity in Messages and AirDrop, and a whole lot more.
Surprisingly, the iPhone 15 also supports StandBy, a feature previously thought to be reserved for the Pro models of the previous year and the current year. Without Always of, the display of the iPhone 15 will be hidden in Standby mode until you tap it.
Apple iPhone 15: Performance
The iPhone 15 is powered by the brand-new A16 Bionic chip, which is up to 40% more powerful than the A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14. The iPhone 15 is now exceptionally speedy and responsive, even while performing intensive tasks like playing games or editing videos. After a few days of using the iPhone 15, I am thoroughly satisfied with its performance. It has handled all I have thrown at it without any slowdown or lag. The iPhone 15’s A16 Bionic chip is also fantastic for use with AR and VR software.
The augmented reality (AR) games and apps I’ve played on my iPhone 15 are awesome. The game’s visuals are polished and lifelike, and it’s a blast to play. The new 5G modem in the iPhone 15 also allows for quicker connections to cellular networks. I haven’t had a chance to give this a try yet, but I’m curious to learn more about it.
Apple iPhone 15: Battery Life
Since the iPhone 13 series, the iPhone has had an excellent battery life; the iPhone 14 makes some minor enhancements to this aspect of the device’s performance. Unfortunately, the iPhone 15 does not appear to have much new to offer in this regard, and as a result, we do not anticipate that it will perform very differently when compared to its predecessor during the independent testing that we will be conducting.
Now, with the new USB-C port, one would imagine that the charging speed of the iPhone 15 would rise, but alas, it remains capped at the same 20W wired charging. The wireless charging capability of the 15W MagSafe remains the same.
Apple iPhone 15: Pricing and Release Date
The ordinary 128GB model of the iPhone 15 (along with the Plus and Pro) remains at $799 in the US, the same price as the iPhone 14 was a year ago. Prices in the UK rose significantly with the release of the iPhone 14, so the fact that they have since returned to pre-release levels is encouraging (the iPhone 15 starts at £799, whereas the 14 started at £849). Prices in Australia are slightly higher than they were a year ago.
128GB | $799 | £799 | AU$1,499 |
256GB | $899 | £899 | AU$1,699 |
512GB | $1,099 | £1,099 | AU$2,049 |
At its ‘Wonderlust’ event on September 12, Apple unveiled its four new iPhone 15 models to the globe; pre-orders began on September 15. A week later, on September 22, it will be for sale.
Verdict
The iPhone 15 (and 15 Plus) could give the impression that they are not as good as other smartphones due to the fact that they use a chipset from the previous year and have a switch that does nothing. The A16 Bionic is, in point of fact, a mobile CPU, and it is one that offers very high speeds. Also, let’s not forget that the USB-C port and the entertaining, changing Dynamic Island were both included in the iPhone 15, which was released in September.
The best part about it is that it now includes a massive 48MP camera and a slew of new iPhone photography tricks that let you perform many of the same things that you can do with the more expensive iPhone 15 Pro (and Pro Max).
