Audient Evo 4: Design
The Audient Evo 4 is a brick made of plastic. Even though it’s not made specifically for portability, it’s smaller than any audio interface I’ve used in years. At first look, it’s not clear which part is meant to be facing up. When you put the Audient Evo 4 on a desk, the headphone and guitar inputs face you because that big volume dial is on the top panel. The Audient Evo 4 is a link with 2 ins and 2 outs. In this case, that means that there are a pair of 6.35mm sockets on the back for studio speakers and a pair of combi XLR/6.35mm sockets for connecting microphones or, for example, a guitar amplifier.
Audient Evo 4: Software
It’s a dry/wet signal control that lets you choose how much of the raw signal from your guitar/microphone and how much of the signal from your recording software you want to hear. When you hold this button down, it changes to “monitor pan.” I didn’t know this until we read the instructions to make sure we hadn’t missed anything. This lets you move the feed from the two inputs to the viewer left and right as much as you want. The Audience Evo 4 is full of surprises. But in order to use one of the most interesting functions, Loopback, you’ll need to download the PC/Mac Evo software. You can buy this audio interface from its official website
Audient Evo 4: Performance
In this world of “plug and play,” it’s a little strange that you have to download the latest driver and software to update the firmware (needed for the test). This took less than a minute after a few rounds of LED blinking.
Then, Logic picked up the interface right away for very clear playing (it’s about the same as the ID44 we have in the studio). We also used an extra camera connection kit and Cubasis on an iPad to test the unit, and the results were just as clear.
Final Words
We’ve had a lot of success with the Evo 4, so far, so good. With the goal of creating a simple user interface, Audient succeeded in creating a device that not only sounds fantastic but also has some truly innovative design elements. The unit is more expensive than some other beginner interfaces by about $120, but we believe it is still worth the investment.
If you’re just starting out in the world of recording, you should familiarize yourself with gain staging. But we really liked this function because it allowed us to check the microphone without having to use one hand to adjust a dial. We have no doubt that the Evo 4 will become a standard in many people’s home recording setups

FAQS
No matter what monitoring mode you are using, you can also set the pan point of each channel’s direct monitoring signal. The audio loopback option on the EVO 4 is another surprise. It gives you an extra internal stereo bus that you can use for routing in your DAW.
EVO 4 is a digitally driven high-performance preamp that sounds like the Audient preamp but is much cleaner.
