The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay EX wireless earbuds showed a lot of promise. In typical B&O fashion, they didn’t look like any of the best wireless earbuds that were already on the market. Instead, they had a beautiful Scandinavian design that made them look like a luxury accessory as well as a pair of earbuds. But with a price tag of $399, £349, or AU$650, they had to offer more than just good looks to support the investment.

The 9.2mm drivers in the Beoplay EX are the biggest drivers that B&O has ever used in a true wireless headphone. The maker says that this “significantly increases the power of every audio moment.” we usually don’t like marketing hype, but the EX sound great and have good dynamics. The Bluetooth 5.2 radios in these headphones handle the SBC, AAC, and aptX Adaptive codecs. During the weeks we used it, the wireless connection was great. We could walk more than 90 feet line of sight away from my iPhone 12 Pro and not miss a beat.

The soundstage is wide and well-balanced, so you won’t be swamped by the bass, but it has enough punch to give the song some energy. We also thought the mid-range was bright and natural, and the higher frequencies were able to push through easily.

When you get the Bang & Olufsen app for your phone (which is available for both Android and iOS), you can do even more with music. There is a manual equalizer, but instead of the standard bars, you move a slider around a circle to make the sound brighter, warmer, more relaxed, or more energetic.

Noise Cancellation

On the plus side, the microphone is great, it fits better, and it has the same great sound we’ve come to expect from the Danish company. With a nice look and good touch settings, they’re a really good package. Active noise cancellation rounds out the list of features you’d want to see in a pair of high-end earbuds.

You can feel the mood in songs. When you hear Billy Joel’s “Piano Man,” you can close your eyes and be in a smokey bar sipping whisky with the regulars. These earbuds just have so much feeling. The Master and Dynamic MW08 had their own sound, which was warm and sounded like live music.

The in-ear headphones can be fully charged twice and then charged another 60% in their convenient aluminum case, which weighs only 52 grams. This gives a total runtime of 23 hours before an external power source is needed in normal mode, and about 18 hours and 30 minutes with active noise cancellation. The headphones can be fully charged in about 70 minutes, and a quick-charge feature lets you listen for up to two hours after only 20 minutes of charging.

The Beoplay EX are true wireless earbuds that have a striking design, a comfortable fit that is both secure and light in the ears, and a sound that is both clear and well-balanced. You can find competing earbuds that offer more effective noise cancellation for a lower price, but if you’re looking for something more economical, Bang & Olufsen isn’t the brand for you.
