Beyerdynamic wants you to think of its new Space as a high-quality speaker that can also be used as a speakerphone. The device lives up to that goal and has a stylish design that will look great on your desk. At startup, a voice tells you how much of the battery is left and if the speaker is pairing or already connected. The Space can connect to two devices at once, and when I turned it on, it always found my phone and computer.
The Space is made to be used by one person, so it can’t go as loud as some other Bluetooth speakers in this price range. It also doesn’t support AAC or AptX streaming, so it doesn’t claim to be a high-quality speaker for audiophiles. The Space streams over Bluetooth 5.0 and supports both the HFP and A2DP streaming profiles.

Beyerdynamic Space review: Design

The device comes with a QuickStart guide and a drawstring bag to keep it safe while it’s being moved. The speaker is 5.2 inches across and 1.5 inches high, and it only weighs 0.75 pounds. A full charge takes 2.5 hours, and each charge is good for 20 hours of use. If the battery runs out, a 10-minute charge will give you two more hours of use.
The Space also comes with a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter that match in color. This USB-A adapter is designed to fit into a hole on the bottom of the speaker. You can buy this speaker from its official website.
Beyerdynamic Space review: Performance
When we first turned on the Beyerdynamic Space Bluetooth speakerphone, we were surprised by how cool the sound was. It sounds like it should be in an action movie. It has power, of course. When we compare the SPACE to other speakerphones I’ve tried, it sounds more like a Bluetooth speaker for music and less like a speakerphone. This small speaker has two passive radiators that give it a lot of “boom” for its size. This tiny speaker won’t let me down when we listen to music.
But what does the person on the other end of the phone think? In my unscientific tests, I found that the built-in microphone on the SPACE was better at getting rid of echo than that on the iPhone. After a short time, the SPACE seemed to pick up new information, and the echoes in the background became less loud. Also helpful were the four microphones.
Beyerdynamic Space review: Sound quality

Take the standard sound profile of Beyerdynamic and put it into a portable speaker. You might think that a small speaker’s stereo capabilities would be limited, but when we played the speaker right next to me, we could see a very large display. The soundstage is pretty big, and thanks to the spatial stereo playback of the Space, the imaging can be three-dimensional and layered while still making each element clear.
Beyerdynamic Space Ratings
Pros
- Mics deliver solid call clarity
- Rich low-mids and crisp highs are ideal for casual listening
Cons
- Audio isn’t particularly powerful
Final Words
The Beyerdynamic SPACE is a stylish and modern version of the common speakerphone. It can be used anywhere, from the office to the living room. It works great for calls, is great for music, and it’s easy to switch between the two. Its price of $179.99 may seem a bit high to some, but the fact that it can be used in many ways helps.
