Amazon tends to push its Echo smart speakers with small steps, not big ones, but sometimes small steps are just enough. The fifth-generation Echo Dot doesn’t sound much different than the previous version, but new motion sensors now allow you to interact with the speaker by tapping on it. It’s a capable smart speaker, but for $10 more, the Echo Dot with Clock offers an LED display that can show useful information while providing all the features of the standard Echo Dot. For this reason, the Echo Dot With Clock is our Editors’ Choice for small smart speakers.
The fifth-generation Echo Dot With Clock is almost identical in appearance to the fourth-generation model. It’s a slightly squat 3.9 x 3.5-inch sphere (HD), available in light blue or white. The sphere is divided diagonally, with the top and front half covered in a mesh fabric and the bottom and back half enclosed in matte plastic. At the top of the globe, four rubber buttons protrude from the fabric. Around the flat base runs a ring of light that glows blue when you interact with Alexa, focusing a particularly bright spot to indicate the direction from which it registered the command.
