Which is why the Devialet Mania seems to immediately appeal to people like me: this is Devialet’s version of ‘affordable,’ and while still not exactly pocket change, we can totally see why in the current economic climate the brand is putting some focus to a speaker that is under a four-figure asking price, aiming to be one of the best wireless speakers that are currently available.
In spite of this, there is a fair amount of competition in this industry, even from other high-end brands who sell products that are hardly low-priced (but are typically more tethered to the wall). However, we did consider the Devialet to be a viable Sonos Move alternative. We thought that it made some sense.

Design and Setup

The purple splotches on the Mania’s box make it look a little, well, great. They remind me of the Wild Fruit packaging for a certain cider brand. Luckily, you don’t have to look at the box for long. When you take the Mania out of its box, the speaker is only available in greys and blacks.
We do think the style will divide people, though. We like how its form is similar to that of other Devialet speakers, like the Phantom. Its almost spherical and symmetrical shape makes it stand out. All of that is made of metal and covered in fabric, which is just what I’d expect from the name. You can buy this speaker from its official website
Devialet Mania: Sound Quality
This is called “real-time calibration,” and the speaker does it every time it is moved to figure out where it is. It will automatically change the sound profile based on how the sound bounces off of nearby objects, whether it’s in an open room, outside, or against a wall.
This Active Stereo Calibration works really well, too. When you turn it on, the stereo sounds are much livelier than when you turn it off. This can be done with a simple switch in the app, and the change is as clear as night and day.
Devialet Mania: Performance

Jay-Z’s Church in the Wild is a fantastic pick, and the Mania rises to the challenge admirably. The low end is delivered with all the bravado and depth of a larger speaker, as well as all the nuance. The creation of a bass note involves more than just adding weight; it also involves adding texture and nuance.
It’s not a neutral voice, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of it. However, the quality of the existing features is what really matters. However, the Mania’s low-end power could be excessive if you position it too close to a wall. You can easily correct this by lowering the bass a couple of notches using the EQ controls.
Devialet Mania: Battery Life
Inside is a 3,200mAh battery that Devialet says can last up to 10 hours, but this depends on how loud you play the speaker and other things. There is, however, a USB-C charging port, which is nice, and you can also get a wireless charging pad, but you have to buy that separately.
Price and availability
The unit we have here is the more expensive Paris Opera version, which has a 24-carat moongold plating. Even though it looks very classy, it costs S$1,760, which is S$400 more than the regular version, which costs S$1,360. But the Paris Opera version does include the wireless charging dock, which costs S$129, if that makes you feel a little better.
Final Words
The Devialet Mania is a high-end compact speaker that is obviously not for everyone. It’s expensive, not very durable, and if you want a smart speaker, it’s not the best choice because it can’t work with Google Assistant.
But there’s no getting around the fact that the Mania sounds great for its size and has a cool factor that most other speakers don’t have. The Mania, like the company’s other portable speakers, is meant to be both heard and seen.
FAQS
The Devialet Mania is the result of four years of hard work putting all of Devialet’s hi-fi knowledge, design skills, and 95dB of noise into a speaker that’s just a little bit bigger than an Amazon Echo and comes with Alexa. All of that isn’t cheap, though.
If Devialet Mania is in sleep mode, press the Switch on Button briefly to turn it on. If Devialet Mania was in sleep mode, you need to wait for it to start up again. Press the PLAY/PAUSE button for a long time. When “Force Setup” is done, Devialet Mania will make a sound and its main LED will turn green.
