Lenovo’s line of workstation machines has been a huge success for the company. While the ThinkStation may not have as much brand identity as the more recognizable ThinkPads, for the markets that require them, Lenovo’s ThinkStation range has been at the forefront of high-performance under-desk offerings since 2008.
Lenovo has focused in everything from small form factor entry-level ThinkStation systems, to high-end two-socket P-series tower designs. The system we’re reviewing today actually marks a major milestone for ThinkStation’s business; The ThinkStation P620 is Lenovo’s first AMD workstation system, replacing the entire range of high-performance Intel-based ThinkStations previously offered.

Lenovo ThinkStation P620 review: Design

Lenovo’s ThinkStation P620 is remarkably small given the hardware you can pack inside. It measures 17.3 inches long, 6.5 inches wide, and 18.1 inches tall, slightly thinner than a mid-tower chassis, though about the same height. There’s a convenient handle on the front of the case so you can easily lift the drive up and you’ll need to take advantage of it.
The P620 can weigh upwards of 50 pounds depending on its configuration. Regardless of your configuration, the ThinkStation P620 comes with a standard three-year warranty, as well as certification from multiple software vendors. Lenovo maintains a list that includes software from Adobe, Autodesk, Bentley, and Siemens, to name a few. You can buy this CPU from its official website.
Lenovo ThinkStation P620 review: Connectivity
The P620 comes with enough ports to accommodate just about anyone. Up front, that includes two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports, all of which are compatible with USB 3.2. The back of the case includes six additional USB-A ports, four of which support USB 3.2 and two of which support USB 2.0. Unfortunately, the AMD chipset means there’s no Thunderbolt on this machine.
On the back, you also have access to PS/2 ports for legacy peripherals, audio/mic inputs and outputs, and a 10 Gbit Ethernet port. That’s a big win for the P620, as it allows you to connect it to a high-bandwidth network without worrying about an additional network card. If you want to go wireless, you can use the Intel AC 9260 chip that is built in, which includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Lenovo ThinkStation P620 review: Performance

Our first test is UL’s PCMark 10, which simulates a variety of real-world productivity and office workflows to measure overall system performance and also includes a storage subtest for the primary drive. The ThinkStation P620 didn’t stand out in the main test, which isn’t surprising; The PCMark notation does not scale linearly with the number of processor cores. At least its storage drive helped it do well in the storage test.
Our other three benchmarks focus on the CPU, using all available cores and threads, to gauge a PC’s suitability for CPU-intensive workloads. Maxon’s Cinebench R23 uses that company’s Cinema 4D engine to render a complex scene, while Primate Labs’ Geekbench 5.4 Pro simulates popular applications ranging from PDF rendering and speech recognition to machine learning. Finally, we use the open source HandBrake 1.4 video transcoder to convert a 12 minute video clip from 4K to 1080p resolution.
Final Words
Because for the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro processor, the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 is a tower-style workstation and a true powerhouse. This CPU can support up to 64 cores with the 3995WX, and that’s with a single CPU; a server would often have more cores than that. The processor has a maximum frequency of 4.0 GHz, 128 lanes of PCIe 4.0 bandwidth, and supports 8-channel memory with a maximum footprint of 1 TB DRAM.
