Linksys WRT1900AC – Introduction
Linksys WRT1900AC is the modern successor of the iconic Linksys WRT54G – one of the main and most popular routers ever made. It has a really similar look to its predecessor and the most impressive hardware specs we’ve seen so far on a wireless router. Some even said that this router is The Best in the world. If you would like to learn more about Linksys WRT1900AC, read our review!
Linksys WRT1900AC – Build And Design
WRT1900AC is first-class and made from strong heavy-duty plastic and seems like it could survive plenty of weight on top- that it may indeed be asked to help, since the case is designed to be stackable should any related products be added to the range.
4 removable antenna are screwed in place with the usual RP-SMA type connectors- 2 on the back plate and one on each side of the chassis. At the back, we also find the typical 4 gigabit LAN and one gigabit WAN port, plus two USB ports. One is USB 3.0 and the secondary is an unusual combination of USB 2.0 with the eSATA port.
Inside the WRT1900AC, we can see attention has been paid to fat use, with heatsinks and a cooling fan to keep processors and RF speaker from over-heating. Half of the highest of the case is perforated with large holes, enable you to see inside but also a potential inlet to house dust that will inevitably land on top.
Linksys WRT1900AC – Setup
Setting up the WRT1900AC is very easy. Unlike other routers that I have set up in the past, where you might have to do some manual IP address config, the WRT1900AC is managed by visiting a website, “https://linksyssmartwifi.com.” When you first plug in the WRT1900AC router into your modem, it seemingly phones home and tells Linksys your web IP address.
Thesetup process requires you to create an account, which is used to log into the router- but when you access the router through a normal website, you can administer it from your smartphone, the office, or surely any internet-connected device. Thesetup process is also checked for updated firmware and runs you over the usual wireless network configuration. Because the router is backward compatible with every other 802.11 technology (b,g,n), you have the option of setting up a 2.4GHz network, a 5GHz (802.11ac) network, or both.
Linksys WRT1900AC – Performance
If you spend $280 on being an 802.11ac early adopter, you’re really only doing it for one reason, You’re giddy at the thought of a wi-fi network that is capable of ethernet-like transfer speeds. On the 2.four GHz band and at short range, we saw a normal throughput of 158 Mb/s, where most other routers plateaued at 170 Mb/s or more. Moving to the 10m test the Linksys turned in the slowest result of the six flagship models tested, averaging 101 Mb/s.
Linksys WRT1900AC’s USB performance was excellent, joint second-best on test with 51 MB/s read speed and 34 MB/s for writing large sequential files.
Linksys WRT1900AC – Pros
- Excellent performance and range
- Unprecedented throughput speed when testing with the second router as a bridge
- Easy setup
- Remote access, and management
- Firmware flashable via OpenWRT
Linksys WRT1900AC – Cons
- Expensive
- Runs warm
- Noticeable electrical odor when running
- Can’t set 5GHz band to 802.11aconly mode
Linksys WRT1900AC – Conclusion
It is the fastest, maddest and most expensive router we’ve ever tested and for most it’ll simply be far more than they need. But this is a router built by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, and if the value is no object you can’t go wrong here.
