The search for the ideal gaming laptop for you is an exercise in finding a happy medium among three primary considerations: system power, screen size, and cost. The Origin EON16-S (starting at $1,799; $2,408 as tested) makes an attempt to achieve its own equilibrium by presenting itself as a system that is only moderately large yet has high-performance components that have just enough room to go wild.
Although it may have stood out as a capable competitor in the market, exceeding the value of machines such as the Razer Blade 18, this year’s Origin EON16-S struggles to keep up with the one gaming laptop that continues to put a smackdown on the rest of the field, the award-winning Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8, in more ways than just speed.

Origin EON16-S: Design
Origin has a unique style touch that is one of my favorite things about the way laptops from the same company look. On the lid of many of these beautiful computers, there is a beautiful mix of colors, and the simple Origin logo is sometimes placed where it would look best. Origin sent us a lid with a beautiful mix of dark purples, light pinks, bright oranges, and soft blues that came together like molten magma. Putting an HD UV Print on the top of your laptop costs an extra $40, but it’s well worth it because it makes the thing look so much better. You can buy this laptop from its official website
Origin EON16-S: Display
Our review model of the Origin EON16-S costs $2,386. It has an Intel Core i9-13900H processor, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card, 32GB of DDR5 4800MHz RAM, a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD for its operating system, 2TB Samsung 990 Pro for extra storage, and a 16-inch IPS 2,560 x 1600-pixel display with a 240Hz refresh rate.
The EON16-S starts at $1,770 and has the same specs except for an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, 16GB of DDR5 4800MHz RAM, and 512GB of Samsung PM9A1 SSD storage. Other configuration possibilities include up to 64GB of RAM and a lot of storage options from Corsair and Samsung.
Origin EON16-S: Keyboard and Trackpad
The number pad is fully functional on the Origin EON16-S. However, we do not like this layout very much because we frequently need to utilize the right shift key to alter the functionality of the numeric keypad. The EON16-S’s keyboard, while functional, has an odd appearance, not unlike what you’d get if you stretched an image vertically in Photoshop without preserving the aspect ratio and made the letters appear artificially large. This is really a matter of personal preference in font type, but it is a poor one nonetheless.
The LED backlight did not impress us either because it only has 15 colors and cannot be individually adjusted for each key. Its intelligence is likewise lacking. We wrote 99 words per minute on 10fastfingers with a 93% accuracy rate. Probably because each key is so tiny, this is a far cry from our usual capabilities.
Origin EON16-S: Software
The EON16-S comes with Windows 11, standard Microsoft software, some apps from Intel, and a very simple control center from Origin. This control center lets you choose from 15 different colors for the keyboard lighting, see information about your computer, change keyboard macros, and change how the battery charges. There isn’t much to see here, but Intel Graphics Command has been added. This gives you choices for the display, colors, video, system, support, and preferences.
Origin EON16-S: Performance
When it comes to ray tracing, the RX 6650M XT can’t quite match the power of a good Nvidia RTX 3060. In my Metro Exodus RTX test, it couldn’t even come close to 60 fps, averaging 48 fps. It doesn’t look great next to cheaper laptops with better screens, and I can’t think of anyone who would want a laptop at this price to be good at ray tracing. People who own an EVO16-S are choosing to live with ray tracing off and FSR on. If you want more, you’ll have to pay for it.
Origin EON16-S: Battery life
We perform a battery rundown test by playing a locally saved 720p video file (the open-source Blender movie Tears of Steel) with the display brightness set to 50% and the audio volume set to 100% on a variety of laptops to evaluate their endurance under similar conditions. Before doing the test, we make sure the battery is fully charged and disable Wi-Fi and the keyboard’s backlight.
Then, we use a Datacolor SpyderX Elite monitor calibration sensor and accompanying Windows software to evaluate the brightness levels at 50% and 100% as well as the laptop screen’s color saturation (how much of the sRGB, Adobe RGB, and DCI-P3 color gamuts or palettes it can display).
Origin EON16-S: Heat
The powerful components included in the Origin EON16-S gaming laptop might cause the device to overheat when used intensively. See how the laptop cools down below: Several heat pipes, multiple fans, and big vents on the bottom and sides make up the Origin EON16-S’s elaborate cooling system. Long gaming sessions won’t cause your laptop to overheat thanks to its innovative cooling mechanism.
Final Words
It’s too bad that you need a laptop that costs almost $2,000 to get good speed, but the EON16-S handles it well. It’s hard to believe that Origin sold this laptop for less than $2,000 when it has a great 13th Generation Intel Core i9 processor, good RTX 4070 graphics, and a good screen and sound system.
Even though our model cost more than that because it has more SSD storage, that part isn’t necessary for it to be as good as it is at this price. Even though the EON16-S has a disappointing plastic lid and base, a boring deck design, loud fans, and a dim display, it has a lot going for it.
Origin EON16-S review: The good and The bad
The Good
- Powerful GPU
- Sleek and quiet build
The Bad
- Lack of a 1440p option
