Those in the know consider the top-tier slab phones produced by Vivo to be among the greatest smartphones available. It’s one of the only smartphones in the world to have Qualcomm’s top-tier ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, has top-notch cameras driven by a custom-built image chip, and sports a luxury design with a textured vegan leather finish.

The X Flip is the Chinese company’s first foray into clamshell foldables; it’s a smartphone that, like the flip phones of the late 1990s and early 2000s, can fold in half and close up like a small box. Even among its own Chinese peers, Vivo lags behind Oppo and Huawei in producing devices with this design size. Samsung was the first to do so three years ago. When it comes to pricing and hardware, though, the Vivo foldable more than makes up for its lack of novelty.

Vivo X Flip: Design

To get the uninteresting details out of the way first, the Vivo X Flip is effectively a flagship model of a 2022 smartphone in pretty much every manner. It has a maximum storage capacity of 512GB, along with 12GB of RAM and is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. Despite the X Flip “only” having a twin camera configuration, I was consistently impressed by the results. There was no need for me to worry about a lag time between pressing the shutter button and the camera and taking the shot. The X Flip’s built-in Night Mode is effective and enjoyable to use because it serves as a tripod in its own right.

However, the camera technology on Vivo’s first flip phone won’t leave you wanting. Even though it lacks the sensors present in Vivo’s superb X90 Pro+, its camera system is still among the best in this form factor.

Vivo X Flip: Performance

The Vivo X Flip features 12GB of RAM that can be increased by an additional 8GB, 256GB or 512GB of internal storage, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. Even though it’s not the latest and greatest Qualcomm chip, it packs a lot of punch. The clamshell’s operating system, Origin OS 3, is built atop Android 13. The screen size of the X flip is 6.74 inches and the resolution is 2520 by 1080.

It has a refresh rate of 120 Hz and an aspect ratio of 21:9. The main screen is readable in direct sunlight despite the lack of a published brightness rating. The phone can be unlocked quickly and securely with the help of the fingerprint sensor located on its side. In comparison to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the OPPO Find N2 Flip, it offers a wider variety of customization possibilities for its 3.0 inch cover screen.

Final Words

The vivo X Flip has a sleek design and powerful internals in a convenient clamshell form factor. The global release of this vivo flip phone has not yet been confirmed, although it is much needed in the market.
