Direct-to-consumer bikes are cheap, but I wouldn’t recommend sending your kid down a hill on a skateboard with unstable wheels. If this is your first bike, choose a well-known brand with a big network of linked stores and shops so you may test a few without having to build or fix it. If you wish to bike at night or in the rain, get an all-in-one package with lights and a bell. This is one of the Best Electric Bikes.

Most bike manufacturers now make entry-level commuter electric bikes. Trek FX+ 2 (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is the cheapest. Step-over and step-through versions exist. (Riding the step-through.) 40 pounds is light! It rides like my college hybrid. It boasts Trek’s patented 250-watt hub motor, a 250-watt-hour battery, standard 9-speed Shimano shifters, fast road bike wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, and entertaining extras like integrated lights, a bell, a rear rack, fenders, and a kickstand. It’s astonishingly cheap for everything you need to start your 6-mile daily commute.

VanMoof’s ebikes are generally recommended for beginners, but we chose the Cowboy 4 ST because it comes with a charger and relies primarily on an app on your phone. The VanMoof 4 ST is gorgeous, low-maintenance, and easy to install. Quad lock and wireless charging are incorporated into the stem. Google Maps makes getting around town easier with a compatible phone case (a little, albeit bothersome, expenditure).

Your smartphone can also monitor its battery level and be simply removed from the frame for indoor charging. At this price, carbon belt drives and automated night lighting are rare. In hilly areas, the 250-watt rear hub motor may not be adequate. Only the app unlocks it. At 5’2″, the 4 ST is too big for me. We like the step-through version, although it also has a high-top tube.

The Specialized Haul ST balances utility and size in the cargo bike market. Its compact size and sturdy construction make it ideal for heavy-duty use. 3.5″ tires smooth the ride, making it pleasant. This bike is perfect for commuting and carrying groceries or a child. This bike makes car-free trips easy. The bike is well-designed and customisable. The T rail rack lets you build your own attachments, or Specialized sells several.

Its 700W motor and 772Wh battery provide ample power and class-leading range. The bike can carry 419 pounds from handlebar to spokes. A small tail frame makes the bike easier to live with while slightly reducing its functionality. Shop elsewhere for two-child hauling or a back rack kid corral. If replacing vehicle excursions with a fun bike is your goal, check out the Haul ST. We didn’t love all of the attachments (or their cost), but the bike is a winner.

The Ride1Up 700-Series is a stylish, high-performance bike. High-volume tires and 100mm front suspension make this bike smooth and the Best Electric Bikes. We enjoyed long commutes on this bike. The powerful 750W motor supports 20 mph with throttle or 28 mph with pedal assist, and the enormous 720Wh battery powers longer trips. Ride1Up offers a step-over or step-through style, two frame sizes, and highly adjustable components to fit most riders.

A rear rack, fenders, and lights make it ready for anything. This bike’s additional features take longer to assemble than others we’ve evaluated. We wouldn’t base our purchase decision on this one-time task. Although it’s heavy, we found it easy to maneuver in most scenarios. The 700-Series’ power, range, comfort, smooth ride, incorporated amenities, and low price impressed us. It’s ideal for errands, commutes, and outdoor activities.

Aventon improved its Best Electric Bikes Level e-bike so that it rides more smoothly and can be seen better. The new bike has a torque gauge that sends power to the rear hub motor in a more even way than the old bike. The Level.2 feels more comfortable and easy to ride than the Level.1. One of our favorite electric bikes for commuting is even better now that it has built-in lights and a smaller, easier-to-use screen.

During our tests, the Level.2 always did better than we expected. The Aventon Level.2 is still the best e-bike for commuting that you can buy for less than $2,000, and it’s also one of the best commuter bikes you can buy in general. With the changes to the platform, a great bike got even better. The first-generation Level is still for sale at Aventon for only $1,500.

The REI Co-op Cycles house brand CTY e1.1 is one of the Best Electric Bikes you can find. The Class 1 bike can carry up to 300 pounds and is driven by a Bafang hub drive motor and a 450Wh battery that is partially built into the downtube. The e1.1 also has a Shimano Altus 7-speed drivetrain and 180mm wheels on the hydraulic disc brakes made by Tektro.

This bike is great for traveling or riding around town because it has lights, a center-mounted kickstand, and Schwalbe Big Ben tires with extra flat protection. If you’re not sure how to put together a bike at home, you can buy the Co-op CTY online and have it sent to a REI store for assembly (or if it’s a gift). Plus, REI members get free flat tire repair and free changes for two years.

Charge Bikes City may be the Best Electric Bikes for work commuters. It has full-fenders to keep dirt off and a rear rack for a pack or backpack, and it accomplishes everything well for a low price. The Charge City offers a five-level power assist and a full-power throttle button for hills. It has everything a commuter needs, including a powerful electronic horn for the bell. The bike comes in step-over, step-through, and several colors.

The City’s electric support is so smooth you’ll think you’re doing it yourself, and the handle bars fold flat for storage in an apartment or cubicle. Before recharging, we commuted for three days in the city. The bike’s lights illuminated the road at night, and the throttle helped us avoid danger when we ran out of gas. Cannondale’s Charge bike can be assembled in 10 minutes or less by beginners. Simply attach the front wheel.
