A leaked internal Xbox roadmap claims Microsoft will launch its Disc-to-Digital program for Xbox One and Xbox Series X owners this month, following an insider beta that reportedly began in July. The roadmap, shared by the Xbox-focused account eXtas1s on X and corroborated by The Verge, also outlines plans to expand backward compatibility on PC and bring Xbox 360 titles to next-generation hardware.
According to the leaked document, the Disc-to-Digital feature will allow players to insert a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a console to generate a digital license bound to their Microsoft account. The license is tied to the specific disc itself, meaning it will transfer to a new owner if the physical copy is sold or loaned, and the original holder will lose access. The feature will not support Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs.
The roadmap indicates that Xbox One and Series X users will be the first to participate because those consoles include physical disc drives. Microsoft is expected to manage all engineering, certification, and support for the program, while publishers retain full control over whether their titles participate, along with rights, pricing, and branding decisions.
Microsoft has been testing the feature internally for months. References to “enable Disc2Digital” appeared in the Xbox PC app code in May, The Verge reported in July, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans. At that time, Microsoft was already warning internal testers that some Xbox One discs might not work with the program depending on how and when they were manufactured. The July report also noted that discs will continue to function after digitization and that the feature will support bundled and multi-disc titles, including their downloadable content.
The leaked roadmap further claims that Microsoft plans a full launch of its original Xbox backward compatibility program on PC in October 2026. Four original Xbox titles,Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy, were already released on PC in July.
Looking ahead, the document reportedly indicates that Xbox 360 games will begin arriving on next-generation Xbox devices starting in 2027 and continuing into 2028. The Verge noted that the disc-to-digital feature itself is expected to see a gradual rollout across next-generation devices during that same 2027–2028 window.
Microsoft has not officially announced the roadmap or confirmed the August launch timeline. The company also has not finalized whether its next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, will include a built-in disc drive, according to The Verge’s earlier reporting. If the next-generation hardware ships without one, the disc-to-digital program would become a critical path for existing owners to preserve access to their physical collections.
