Golf is an expensive game and I certainly support anyone who is looking to cut costs and stay within their budgets. Many of the applications listed are excellent for use on the course, and you can get away with using them completely free of charge to get your key meters.
That being said, I have to be honest about my thoughts about cell phones and golf courses. Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea to use your phone during a round for several reasons:
– It can be distracting because you may receive calls, text messages or feel the desire to use social media when you should be concentrating on the task at hand golf!
– Keeping your phone in your pocket during a round can be a real physical burden. Some smartphones are now huge, and it’s not exactly optimal to have it in your pocket during the swing. That’s what makes me break the deal.
– Constantly taking your phone out and putting it back in your pocket or golf bag/cart during a round wastes valuable time and could slow down your game and keep you from concentrating during your pre-course routine.
– Almost all GPS golf applications will drain your phone’s battery. You need to remember to start with a full charge, for those of you who can’t bear the thought of a flat battery.
The market for GPS applications for golf is huge, and I’ve recently tested several of the free applications on the course to let you know which ones are worth downloading.
