iPhone Not Ringing: There may be more than one reason why your iPhone isn’t ringing right. There are a lot of things you can do to fix your phone before you take it in for service. You can also fix an Android that won’t ring in a lot of the same ways. Here are 6 of the best ways to check your iPhone’s settings and fix it if it’s not ringing.
Fix: iPhone Not Ringing Problem
Restart iPhone
Begin the troubleshooting process by restarting your iPhone. Often this classic fix is enough to make your iPhone ring again. That’s because sometimes a minor issue or an app running in the background can cause the iPhone not to ring for incoming calls. This can be fixed by rebooting the phone.
- Long press the Power button until you see the “Slide to power off” message.
- Swipe from left to right on the slider to turn off your iPhone.
- Once switched off, turn on the iPhone by holding the Power button again.
Check Your Mobile Plan Status
Let’s start by ruling out things that aren’t technical. First, make sure you have a plan for your phone. If your plan has been suspended for more than three to four weeks, your iPhone won’t ring because most carriers only let expired accounts receive calls for a certain number of days.
If this is the case, just reload your phone and turn it back on, and your iPhone will start ringing again when you get a call.
Disconnect Bluetooth Audio Devices
If you leave wireless headphones like AirPods connected to your iPhone, your incoming call ringtone may play through them instead of the phone’s speakers. Most of the time, this happens with third-party earbuds that don’t know when you’re wearing them.
If you open the Control Center and tap the Bluetooth icon, you can turn off all wireless devices. Instead, go to Settings > Bluetooth to turn off devices one by one. Tap on the name of the device you want to disconnect and then tap Disconnect. Once you turn off your Bluetooth devices, incoming calls should play through the speakers on your iPhone.
Turn the Ringtone Volume Up
- Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics. On older iPhone models, this is called Sounds.
- Drag the Ringtone and Alert Volume slider to the right. The further right it is, the louder your ringtone will be.
- You might also want to turn off Change with Buttons. Doing so will prevent you from accidentally lowering the ringtone volume using the physical volume buttons. When this option is disabled, the volume buttons only change the volume for media, not your ringtone.
Double-Check if You’ve Blocked the Caller
- Open Settings and tap Phone.
- Scroll down and tap Blocked Contacts.
- In the list of blocked contacts, swipe left on the desired entry and tap Unblock. Alternatively, tap Edit, then hit the red minus (–) button and tap Unblock.
Choose a Different or Louder Ringtone
- Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Ringtone.
- From here, tap to hear the different tones. When you’ve found one that suits you, hit Back.
Why your iPhone won’t ring
There are various reasons why your iPhone ringer isn’t working on incoming calls. Here are some of the most common ones:
- The speaker port is clogged.
- Your phone is physically damaged.
- Your ringer volume is turned down.
- Your phone is on Do Not Disturb or Airplane mode.
- Your phone is paired with Bluetooth
- Your phone is infected with malware.
FAQs
Most of the time, an iPhone won’t ring because the Ring/Silent switch (also called Silent Mode) is turned on. When Silent Mode is on, you’ll see an orange band next to the Ring/Silent switch, which is on the upper left side of your device, just above the Volume buttons.
Your phone’s Do Not Disturb mode, blocked numbers, call forwarding, Bluetooth connections, and SIM card are some of the things that might automatically send your calls to voicemail. Don’t worry if you turned on any of these phone features by accident or because you forgot you did.
Most of the time, when your iPhone doesn’t have service, Do Not Disturb is turned on, or a Carrier Settings update is ready, it goes straight to voicemail.
