Samsung is reportedly diverting display driver IC (DDI) reserves originally secured for future product development into current Galaxy Z Fold 8 mass production, after demand for the passport-style foldable exceeded the company’s initial forecasts and overwhelmed its sole chip supplier’s production capacity.
According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung has increased component orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 across multiple categories, but the DDI the specialized semiconductor that controls pixel signals for the device’s OLED display has become the tightest link in the supply chain. The DDI is designed by Samsung’s System LSI division and manufactured exclusively by Taiwan’s United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) on a 22-nanometer process. UMC’s capacity on that node is reportedly already at its limit because it is also producing semiconductors for other customers.
Samsung requested what UMC calls a “super hot run,” an expedited production schedule that moves a specific wafer lot to the front of the queue. UMC declined, according to the report, because accelerating output would require disrupting the production schedules of other clients already on the same process line. A normal DDI production run takes approximately four months from wafer input to finished chips, which must then be paired with Samsung Display’s OLED panels before final phone assembly.
Why the DDI Cannot Be Substituted
Unlike general-purpose memory such as LPDDR, DDI chips are customized for specific displays. Samsung’s three new foldables the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 each use different DDI specifications. That makes it impossible to redirect existing supply from one model to another when demand shifts unexpectedly.
An industry source told ZDNet Korea that Samsung plans to use DDI reserves originally secured for future development in current Fold 8 mass production. The report does not specify whether those reserves were extra components set aside for continued Fold 8 production into next year, or were intended for the device’s successor, presumably the Galaxy Z Fold 9.
Demand Surges Across Multiple Markets
The supply pressure extends beyond DDIs. Samsung is also increasing orders for Fold 8 hinges and ultra-thin glass (UTG) cover windows, according to the same report, indicating that demand is straining the broader component ecosystem. In contrast, demand for the clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip 8 is reportedly below expectations.
The Fold 8’s stronger-than-expected performance follows a notable quarter for Samsung’s conventional smartphone lineup. According to Counterpoint Research data reported by Android Central and 9to5Google, the Galaxy S26 Ultra was the best-selling Android phone globally in Q2 2026, while the base Galaxy S26 also placed in the global top 10.
Competitive Pressure Ahead of Apple’s Foldable
The timing of the shortage carries competitive weight. Apple is widely expected to announce its first foldable iPhone at a September event. Any sustained availability gap on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could push prospective buyers toward Apple’s entry into the category, making Samsung’s supply chain response a matter of both operational and strategic urgency.
Samsung has not publicly commented on the DDI shortage or its plans for replenishing the diverted reserves.
