How to Mute Android and iPhone: With smartphones, you no longer have to slam down your phone to end a call. You can do the same thing with an Android phone by flipping it. It’s not quite as good, but it’s still easy. Do not disturb mode is a great way for both Android and iPhone to silence all or some calls. But you can’t mute just one contact at a time. One might think of blocking the caller, but that would be too harsh.
So, what’s the other choice? One easy way to mute someone is to give them a silent ringtone. As the name suggests, this ringtone doesn’t make any noise. So, even though your phone will still ring, you won’t be able to hear the ringtone. So, calls from that contact will no longer be heard. Don’t worry, because the person won’t know you turned off their calls. Let’s look at how to do that on an Android phone and an iPhone.
How to Mute iPhone
- Use the switch to quickly mute your ringer. If you need to shut your ringer off in a hurry, flip the switch above the volume buttons on the left side of the phone to mute the ringer. If the switch shows a red color, it’s been muted.
- Mute alarms by turning them off. Putting your iPhone on Silent mode by using the switch will not affect any alarms you have set. The alarm’s volume is connected to your ringtone volume, so you can turn it down with the Volume buttons but you can’t mute it.
- Mute music by turning it down while playing. Music is not affected by the mute switch, so you’ll need to turn it down using either the Volume buttons or the volume slider in the app that’s playing the music. Turning the music all the way down will mute it.
Muting Yourself During a Call
- Place or receive your call as you normally would. You can mute any phone call using your iPhone.
- Move the iPhone away from your head. This will enable the screen, as it is turned off when the iPhone detects that it’s being held at your hear to prevent accidental button presses.
- Tap the “Mute” button to mute a call. The “Mute” button looks like a microphone with a slash through it. Muting the call will turn off your iPhone’s microphone. You’ll still be able to hear the other person, but they won’t be able to hear you.
- Press and hold the “Mute” button to hold the call. This will put the call on hold, allowing you to browse your phone or add in another caller.
- Tap the “Mute” button again to unmute the call or take it off hold. Once you are unmuted, the other person will be able to hear you again.
How to Mute Android
- Use the power button. Press the Android phone’s “Power” button and hold it until a menu appears on the screen. Clear the “Silent Mode” check box in the menu to disable the Silent Mode option.
- Press the “Up” volume button on the Android phone until the Silent Mode icon on the screen changes. The Silent Mode icon looks like a speaker with a line through it or a speaker with circle and a line superimposed over it. When the Silent Mode is disabled, only a speaker icon appears.
- Use the Settings menu. Select the “Settings” icon from the Android phone’s home screen. Select “Sound Settings,” then clear the “Silent Mode” check box.
FAQs
Android doesn’t offer a native way to mute calls from one person. However, you can easily download a silent ringtone from the internet and assign the same to the contact that you want to mute.
Examples of time-sensitive notifications are reminders, emails, or messages that contain references to date and time. So, if the Reminders and Messages apps are not in your list of Allowed Apps, Do Not Disturb will still let their notifications pass through due to the nature of their content.
